Virginia Rose Alexander Davis Coleman, 97, passed away on Monday, October 3, 2022. She was born on December 16, 1924. She was the fourth born, of eleven children, to Robert and Thomisene Alexander (both deceased) in Belton, South Carolina. Virginia lived in Roanoke since she was one and a half years old, being reared by her grandparents, W. E. and Mary Davis (both deceased), whose name she used.

She attended Roanoke City Public Schools, and graduated from Lucy Addison High School in 1943. In 1949, she was united in marriage to John M. Coleman. To this union, two children were born, Carolyn Maria Coleman, and Durell Alexander Coleman.
In 1981, Virginia became a foster parent with DePaul’s Family Services and had numerous children in her home. In 1986, she retired from the Veterans Administration Medical Center (Dietary Department) after twenty years of service. For many years, Mrs. Coleman was a member of the High Street Floral Club, and the Bertha Taborn Missionary Band.
In addition to her parents and grandparents, Virginia was preceded in death by her three brothers, five sisters and five sisters-in law.
Her survivors are one daughter, Carolyn M. Finney, of Roanoke, VA; one son, Durell A. Coleman, of Los Angeles, California; three grandsons, Rayshawn Coleman, of Stone Mountain, Georgia, Antoin L. Virginia was one of a kind - witty, fashionable, loved to travel while she could and wise. Her basement had the coolest collection of travel memorabilia. I loved her hospitality during the holidays. She had a beautiful bright smile. Her living room was filled with pictures and the accomplishments of her children, which were many. I will miss her laughter and smile. And I will never forget the day I ran out of gas when I was twenty-something and walked to her house expecting a lecture and instead, a smile and money for gas and to never feel embarrassed for asking for help if you are trying. Coming from a "be prepared always" military family, that was so kind. That saying stayed with me and I use it often when I see families stranded on the side of the road, old homeless people picking up cans. Any dollars I provided them may have come from my pocket, but came from the heart of Virginia Rose Coleman. When times got rough as a single mom, you inspired me. If you could do it, I could do it. When I signed my mortgage documents, I thought of you. Chris and I love you, Grandma Ginsy. I know you are still around, probably looking at various shot glass collections and "whatnot". And you are among the angels making them laugh. You made so many people stronger than they ever thought they could ever be, just by being you. You live on through the courage and good acts done in love. Ancestors and the future recipients of your gifts thank you. Till we meet again.

May the unconditional love of GOD be a source of strength and comfort during this time of bereavement. Miss Virginia was the matriarch and rock of The Coleman Family and will definitely be missed. From her rolls, squash and big holiday meals to her many stories about her childhood and her years of working at the VA. Miss Virginia welcomed me into the family with open arms and always made me feel at home.
I’m grateful and I thank GOD for allowing me the time to get to know her, as well as, her knowing Kenyatta and Kierra and them her. She has earned her time with GOD now and she has left her footprints on the hearts of those who she loved and loved her and all she touched. Thank you for sharing. We love her and will miss her very much. Rest In Peace.Love, Donna

Aunt Virginia, you are truly going to be missed. I remember you still being able to drive and parking close to your house at the age of 90. Mama, your one last sister is going to miss talking to you on the phone at least one a week. You are in the presence of God now. Take your rest. Love, your niece Cassondra Cooley

Mrs Coleman was a grandmother to not just Rayshawn, but to all of us. My teen years I learned so much from her not just from her words and wisdom, but from observation. She didn't talk a good game, she lived and showed it. The way she took her foster children in and loved and cared for them was beyond admirable. She helped them grow and flourish. People like her don't get the recognition that they deserve. I'll always love her for her kindness, her willingness to help me grow, and the lesson of kindness that she showed. Sleep well Mrs Coleman, because you earned your wings.
