Virginia Rather Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 14, 2013.
Virginia (Ginny) Carvel Carnes Rather, age 69, of Atlanta passed away February 14, 2013 of ALS.

She was born in Atlanta, Georgia December 1, 1943 and was the daughter of the late Carvel Grant Long Carnes and William Boyd Carnes. Ginny was a fifth generation Atlanta native. Her great, great grandfather, Lemuel Pratt Grant was noted for his key role in the development of Atlanta as a railroad hub and his philanthropy which included the donation of the land for Grant Park to the city.

She graduated from Northside High School in 1961 and then earned her B.A. degree from Hollins College in 1965. During the summers of her college years and for another sixteen years she taught horseback riding at Fritz Orr's and then the Westminster Schools. As a noted show hunter equestrienne, she competed in horse shows throughout the eastern United States and earned her colors with the Shakerag Hunt Club.

In 1965 Ginny began her runway and print modeling career, modeling for every major Atlanta store including Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Macy's and Rich's in such shows as Sol Kent's "Fashionata". She also served as president of The Atlanta Models' Guild. After runway and fashion print, she continued in commercial print and television commercials throughout the U.S. and abroad. She was represented by Atlanta agents including Factor Women, Elite, Arlene Wilson, Real People, L'Agence and People Store as well as Wilhelmina in New York and The Green Agency in Miami. Her modeling career spanned 48 years.

Ginny also loved to entertain and chaired large events such as The Junior League Ball and fundraisers for The Atlanta Preservation Center as well as hosting intimate dinners such as The High Museum Wine Dinner at her home.

Mrs. Rather was a member of The Cathedral of St. Philip, Junior League of Atlanta, Atlanta History Center, Atlanta Botanical Gardens, High Museum of Art, Madison-Morgan Cultural Center and The Atlanta Preservation Center where she served on the Board of Trustees.

Mrs. Rather is survived by her husband, Daniel Brown Rather; son, Stuart Ellis Gould and daughter-in-law, Kristin Coleman Gould of Rumson, NJ; daughter, Carvel Grant Gould of Atlanta; two stepsons, Daniel and Pratt Rather of Sewanee, TN and Bend, OR; three grandchildren, Coleman, Katherine Carvel and Grant Gould of Rumson, NJ; two stepgrandchildren, Ellery and Kellen Rather of Bend, OR; and her brother, William Stansbury Carnes, sister-in-law, Mary Wilson Carnes, and a niece and two nephews of Chatham, NH.

The funeral service will be held at The Cathedral of St. Philip on Monday, February 18, 2013 at 11 o'clock in the morning. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the Gould Room. Interment will follow the service at Westview Cemetery.
