Vito Carrieri Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 19, 2024.
Vito Anthony Carrieri, also affectionately known as Tony, passed away on September 16, 2024, at the age of 89 in Mesa, Arizona. Born on February 11, 1935, Vito lived a life marked by passion, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to his family and community.

Vito began his career as an apprentice carpenter in Italy before moving to America at the age of 20. He came to this country with only one small trunk holding all of his belongings. He sailed to America with his mother on the SS Andrea Doria arriving in New York. He dreamed of a promising future and soon after met the love of his life, JoAnne. He quickly established himself in the carpentry field, working as a foreman for the Chicago Carpenters Union. In 1974, he relocated his family to Arizona, where he founded Carrieri Construction, a company responsible for building numerous custom homes in Mesa, Scottsdale, and Paradise Valley. His entrepreneurial spirit led he and JoAnne to open Vito's Pizza Place and Italian Ristorante in 1986, which grew from his dream, into a beloved family-run restaurant that seated over 250 customers and employed on average 70 employees. Vito's Pizza has been an award-winning restaurant and a community treasure. The building that houses Vito's was built by Vito himself and his nephew David Rita and son Tony Carrieri.

Beyond his professional achievements, Vito was renowned for his larger-than-life personality. A captivating storyteller and a friend to all, he cherished his relationships with his customers and employees and enjoyed celebrating life's moments with them. Vito's hobbies included fishing in places like Costa Rica and Alaska, traveling, especially to Italy, gambling, watching westerns, and sharing his culinary skills with his family. He took great joy in teaching his children and grandchildren the art of building homes and cooking, and he loved tending to his garden, particularly his fig trees and roses, which he often picked for his wife, JoAnne. Vito and JoAnne enjoyed 62 years of marriage which produced a beautiful family and legacy.

Vito is survived by his loving wife JoAnne R. Carrieri; children and son and daughter's in-law: Anthony R. Carrieri and Angela Carrieri, Roseann Carrieri Bounds and Steven J Bounds, John Paul Carrieri and Nancy Kennedy-Carrieri; and grandchildren: Ashley Carrieri Viera, Nicholle Carrieri Dankert, Mathew Carrieri, Joseph Carrieri, Michael Bounds, Jeffrey Bounds, Alexander Carrieri, Piper Henderson, Vito Carrieri, and Gino Carrieri. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren: Hailey Chastain, Bradley Dankert, Isabella Carrieri, and Sebastian Carrieri. Vito was preceded in death by his mother, Antonietta, father, Pasquale and brother, Donato Carrieri.

Vito's legacy of love, wisdom, compassion, and laughter has left an indelible mark on everyone he met, ensuring that his memory will be cherished and remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Vito was truly "one of a kind".
We had the privilege of knowing Vito (and Joanne) for 20+ years and during that time were neighbors twice (Las Sendas and Mtn Bridge) and were fortunate to develop a friendship that we will always treasure.
We admired Vito for being a "self made man" and for being such a warm, kind and exceptional human being. We shared many stories of building homes, family and fun adventures over great food and a glass of wine. Vito always made us (and everyone) feel like family. We will always be grateful for his friendship and treasure the wonderful memories.
Sending much love to the Carrieri family and especially Joanne (Vito´s angel on earth)
With our deepest sympathies,
Pat and Deb Ryan

Vito and Joanne were a major support in my raising funds for Breast Cancer. After many years of being a patron, they became financial supporters for the cause. His smile, and laugh were instant magnets to the heart that he had and showed to those he called family of Vitos. Although patrons, we always were treated like family with each and every table visit.
Vito....you will be missed, but your legacy will live on in your establishments and in those you touched. Hugs to Joanne and the family.
RIP my friend...

So sorry for your loss. Many years ago we had ordered a pizza for delivery and Vito himself delivered it. He recognized my husbands name because he had serviced the CocoCola fountain equipment and delivered our pizza because he wanted to ask a question. We still laugh about it! He sure was quite a character.

I am so sorry for your loss. Vito was a very caring person. When we visited the mesa restaurant he always greeted his customers. It was always nice to see him. His pizza is still the best.

This isn't my first memory of Vito but it definitely stands out. My husband served as the GM of Vito's restaurant for a few years and one night a group was staying very late - it was after closing and they were the only table left. Instead of asking them to leave, he walked over to the table, set his keys down and said, "folks, I've got to get home. Will you lock up when you leave?" He had a wit and charm that were unparalleled. Vito was larger than life, a character who was funny, kind, loving, hard working and always had a twinkle in his eye. If you were fortunate enough to have known him he was undoubtedly a blessing in your life. We will miss you Vito. May you rest in peace knowing you lived a beautiful life and left a wonderful legacy. Sending prayers to his family and all who loved this amazing man.

I had the pleasure of overseeing Vito's for 5 years. At night around 10pm (closing time) Vito would make himself an espresso and would ask "Sonny" (me) to join him. At that time allI could think of is 1. I'm going to get so behind with closing, not sure I can sit. 2. If I drink an espresso at 10pm, I'll be awake for 2 days. However, I could not turn him down and sat for a few minutes with him (no espresso) ha ha. It was a great 5 years, it truly felt as if I was part of the family, especially since customers would ask about my grandparents (Joanne's parents) all the time. I'm glad I was able to give Vito an Joanne the freedom to travel since they grew to trust me with their business. And ultimately I was glad I made some of Vito's dreams a reality. We accomplished a lot in 5 years! Cheers to you Vito, have fun up there, we'll see you again. Eliseo

Vito always had a story to tell you when he saw you. We will miss seeing his infectious smile and grin when he told a joke to keep you laughing. His Life story is the American Dream! We were blessed to know him 32 years first as fellow Parishioners and Customers and fast becoming Friends. Jo Anne we are so very sad for you and the family but know as Vito did that he Lives again and Rests in Heaven with the other Angels. Thanks Vito for the Wonderful meals shared, the numerous stories and countless laughs but most of all your Friendship, wisdom and generosity to so many.
I have no doubt we will share a glass of wine again one day and a laugh and Vegas story so until we meet again may God keep you in the palm of His hand!
Love , Pam and Jim King
