Alfie Wade, Jr.
August 19, 2008
Vittorio and I, both of us born the same year 1932 the year of the Monkey in the Chinese calendar. We celebrated our 21st birthdays together and from that time on our friendship was sealed. He was a ardent supporter of all of the Jazz activity I generated in Montreal during those days and years that followed. He would come and dance like a dervish when my band the Stablemates played at the Vieux Moulin on Sherbrooke street near Bleury at that time. In the years that followed he was always happy to share his creative accomplishments with me which I admired and enjoyed immensely. He was truly a giant and to some degree an unsung creative hero to the world at large. We last saw each other in October 2007 and shared a very bright moment of reminiscence of our youth and the various humorous encounters we shared in those days gone by. At that time he was totally surprised that the only representation that I had of his work was a "Juste pour Rire" T-shirt which he said was an original. Without hesitation he signed and gave me a copy of the "Dog Book” and the catalogue with the postcard package of his Quebec museum exhibition which I will treasure until the end of my days. It is without a doubt that I am very sadden when I heard of his passing knowing that all the while his health was fragile. When I returned home to Sète, France I would make a point of calling him from time to time and our conversations centered his constant energy to maintain balance in his life and my efforts here to see if I could pull together some additional exposure of his work particularly since there is a rich art community here and just as I finally connected with an art gallery who were more than impressed with his work and were ready to organize a Vittorio project. Sadly when I called a friend in Montreal he informed me that my dear friend had made his transition. It is my sincere hope that his story doesn't end here and that the friends such as I who loved him dearly and his loyal loving companion Judith find a way to perpetuate the wonderful legacy of his life and his work. I know the Force is with him as it always was every time his pen touched the paper and in the pictures he took. Without a doubt, his incredible spirit and energy is a veritable enduring part of my life and for all those as well who were graced with his presence.
Hey Vittorio, I know that you are doing your dance up there and laughing as you always did at the folly of those who would never give you a fair shake. Too bad for them. “tant pis pour eux.”
Well you can be sure that even though your song is ended your melody lingers on.
With all the love in my heart I bid you Adieu
Alfie

I have such wonderful memories of Vittorio in his spiffy car, and my dad, Don Arioli, being so tickled to take a drive with him. Those two little powerhouse Italians made an impact on me - that so much tenderness could abide in that adorable macho-ness. Darling man, that Vittorio - love you.

Vittorio Fiorrucci (1932-2008) était l'ami de tous ceux qui ont eu la chance de le connaître et son décès nous fera manquer son accolade chaleureuse et son humour toujours positif face à la vie.
Il était un grand artiste!
