Dr. W.R. "Will Roy" Matthews died on Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at the age of 94, at his home in Mexia. Dr. Matthews was born in Dawson on April 1, 1914, to Freddie Bell and Ennis Autrey Davidson Matthews. Dr. Matthews was the second child of nine children and the oldest son.He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Juanita Lee "Pat" Matthews; four sisters, Vestal Lee, Doris, Betty and June; and three brothers, Dewey, Jack and Joe Matthews.Dr. Matthews graduated from Dawson High School and attended John Tarleton College in Stephenville. He graduated from Texas A and M University in 1945 with a degree in veterinary medicine. He practiced vet medicine in Texas for over 30 years. He had a passion for large animals but loved all. He also was a professor of veterinary technology at TSTI in Waco.Dr. Matthews is survived by a son, William P. "Bill" Matthews and wife Carol; a daughter, Linda Matthews Flatt and husband Dicky of Mexia; grandchildren, William Brian Matthews and wife Susan of Enterprise, Ala., and Joe and Rene' Matthews of Lexington, Ky., and Fred and Tiffany Matthews of Memphis, Tenn., Sarah Matthews Havard and husband Dr. Kenneth Havard of Georgetown, Clint and Jill Flatt of Mexia, and Doug and Marika Flatt of Round Rock; and 13 great-grandchildren, Tyler Flatt, Molly Flatt, Annalise Flatt, Tucker Flatt, Finn Flatt, Megan Matthews, Alexis Matthews, Zachary Matthews, Brayden Matthews, Sierra Matthews, Maggie Matthews, Millie Matthews and Molly Matthews. He is also survived by one brother, Freddie Bell Jr. of South Dakota, and his faithful friend, Sylvia Johnson.In lieu of flowers the family request that memorials be sent to Lara's House, P.O. Box 803, Groesbeck, TX 76642.Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Friday, April 3, at Dawson City Cemetery with visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Porter Funeral Home in Mexia.Pallbearers will be Brian Matthews, Joe Matthews, Fred Matthews, Clint Flatt, Doug Flatt and Tyler Flatt.
