Wadad Ghosn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 10, 2011.
GHOSN, Wadad - 74 years, Halifax, wife of the late Jacob Ghosn, mother of Peter Ghosn (of Halifax), Jasmine Ghosn (of Toronto) and Cristine (Tony Kahil) (of Toronto), and grandmother of Alina Jo, Alexandra and Elias Kahil (of Toronto), passed away peacefully, on April 8, 2011, just one month after learning she had cancer, at the QEII Health Sciences Centre, surrounded by her family. She was the daughter of the late Francis and Foutina Hokayem, and born in 1937 in Artez – the mountain village of Bathroun, North Lebanon, and was the youngest sister of Marie, Haneh, Arsanious, and Abla. As a young girl she helped her family tend to the land, the olive gardens and grape vines and to make bulgur wheat, olive oil, soap, silk and other household staples. At age 11, she went to live with her oldest sister Marie in Tripoli to study at the School of Sainte Famille where she completed her Lebanese Certificate in 1953, and her French Certificate in 1954. While studying towards her Baccalaureate, and achieving first place ranking, she was offered a position with the Republic of Lebanon's Ministry of Finance, in the Department of Lands and Surveys, where she worked from 1957 to 1964, as the only woman in a department of 75 men, initially at the Government offices at the "mayleeye" in Tripoli and later in Beirut – Centre Ville, during that period in history when Beirut was known as the "Paris of the Middle East". As a beautiful, intelligent and independent young woman, she was largely devoted to teaching prayer to children, and serving with a chapter of the Legion of Mary, which she established, with the permission of the Maronite Bishop, at St. Michael's Church in Tripoli. She coordinated annual pilgrimages to the various ancient Christian Churches and Monasteries located all across Lebanon. Despite many offers of marriage, it was an olive farmer from North Lebanon – Jacob Ghosn who ultimately captured her heart, and they were married in Tripoli on October 27, 1964. Wadad arrived as a new bride in Canada in February 1965, and since then was an active member of the Lebanese Community in Halifax. She was a hard working lady – both inside and outside of the home, raising her three children, assisting her husband in running a general store for approximately 17 years on Rockingstone Road in Halifax, and later working in the Dietary Department of the Victoria General Hospital, known by her co-workers as "Betty". Wadad was a member of the Confraternity of Our Lady of Lebanon Church in Halifax, and was also a member of the Catholic Women's League of Canada (CWL) at St. Teresa's Roman Catholic Church on North Street. She will be remembered most for her faith and kindness towards others, for her sparkling smile and very social nature, her ability to make new friends of all ages, and to opening her home in such a way that new friends would soon call her "mother" or "sister" or "grandma". She will be dearly missed by her many friends and her family, including nieces and nephews in Ottawa, Washington DC, Abu Dhabi, and Lebanon. Visitation will be held 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Cruikshanks Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax. Funeral service will be held at Our Lady of Lebanon Church, Joseph Howe Drive, Halifax, Monday at 11:00 a.m. Interment will take place in Diman, North Lebanon. Family flowers only. The family is very grateful to the supporting community of friends and the nurses of unit 4.1 at the QEII for their kindness in caring for Mrs. Ghosn during the final days of her life.

I remember when Taunt Wadad would call our house; i could never put a face to her voice, but i always knew it was her on the phone. (before we got caller ID) By her saying "how are you Cynthia" i could always hear her warm welcoming voice on the other line, n at the moment i just knew it was Taunt Wadad. Even though i have never met her, talking to her on the phone for just 5 mins makes me feel like i've been talking to her like she was at my house, having a cup of coffee.

She was a beautiful daughter, wonderful wife, outstanding mother, and the perfect grandmother. Who could have asked for more.

She is an angel now. Sitting with her brother and sister, keeping an eye on us all.

God bless her, May she rest in peace.

Pete, Christine and Jas:

Your mom was a brilliant lady and quite ahead of her time as a young professional in Lebanon back in the day.

Like everyone else, very sorry to hear about your loss. Her life, however, was a very long and fulfilling one. She was a brilliant student and public servant. She married a very good man. Had three beautiful children who, in their own ways, grew up to make her and her husband extraordinarily proud. She provided an example of what her kids, especially women could achieve in a lifetime and how to be good mother- taught her kids how to be strong by lifting other people up, not bringing them down.

I remember all those days sitting in the living room beside the store, or hanging out in the kitchen looking at the hummus and olives that seemed to be permanent fixtures on the table. Everything had its place and was arranged by someone who knew exactly how to get things done. I also recall all that time in the lovely Chebucto Rd house listening to the banterings in Arabic between you all and your mom, not having a clue what was being said, but getting the general idea from the protestations that momma bear was merely keeping the cubs in line and that one day they would thank her for all that.

I'm sorry I was unable to make the service but the video celebration of her life was very touching, very evocative. Thank you for sharing and celebrating her life with all those whose life she touched, once upon a time, in her own very special way.

I first met Wadad at the Credit Union many years ago when Cristine worked there. Over the years she always made it a point to say hello when she came into the branch at Young st. She was a lovely woman who was very proud of her family and anxious to tell you everything about them. On different occasions I was lucky to be invited into her home where she cooked a feast, she was a fabulous cook and nothing seemed too much for her to do. Please know that your mother was very well liked and she will be missed. My heart goes out to all of you.

Dear Peter,

I read of your mother's death in today's newspaper. She was a remarkable woman. You will remember that all of your life. Her presence will be with you, you will cherish it.

I have fond memories of you at J.L.Ilsley and I wish to express my sympathy on your loss.

I remember seeing you once not so long ago in Point Pleasant Park.

I still see former Ilsley students from time to time and when they say "hello Mrs. Bryson' I am always surprised. I must not have changed that much over the years.

My husband, David , died almost two years ago.
It was a great loss for me and my three children. All three of our children live here in the city and two of our grandchildren are now in University and one more to start in the fall.

Give my best to your sisters, whom I really never had a chance to know.
Sincerely, Carol Bryson
