Walter Dale Brewer, 70, of Pensacola, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2022.
Born in Pensacola, FL on December 16, 1951, Dale and his family moved to Gulf Breeze in 1959. He graduated from Woodham High School in 1969 and continued his studies at Pensacola Junior College and University of West Florida, earning Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees in 1979.
After graduation, Dale embarked on a lifelong journey devoted to education. He began his career teaching at WHS and PJC. He took a brief break from teaching with South-Western Publishing Co. and Random House Inc. where he was responsible for education accounts. In 1988, Dale realized his calling was back in the classroom and returned to Pensacola Junior College. He retired from Pensacola State College after 25 years of service. In his own words, he wrote, "I absolutely LOVED this career! Additionally, I loved all of my fabulous colleagues and AWESOME students!" Beloved by his colleagues and students, many remained close to Dale throughout the years.
Following his retirement, Dale didn't stray far from an educational experience; his concentration shifted from teacher to student as he traveled to France, the Netherlands, and Italy, immersing himself in the local culture and customs. Of all his memorable travel experiences, one he cherished was the privilege of attending Good Friday Mass celebrated by Pope Francis at St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican. Dale loved to visit New York City, where he would attend food and wine festivals, meet his favorite celebrity chefs, and, of course, he was sure to visit Broadway for a show.
When he wasn't traveling, Dale enjoyed time with his beloved dachshunds, Mardi Gras, Oscar, and most recently, Avery. An avid cook, Dale loved to learn new techniques and recipes from his favorite cooking shows. He enjoyed playing bridge with friends and playing the piano. A gifted pianist, Dale's love for music began at an early age in the church. Throughout his life, he entertained family and friends playing hymns, sing-a-longs, and showtunes. Dale was always fun to be around and will be remembered for his love of family, music, and learning.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Janice White Toney and stepfather, Lynn Toney; father, Walter Cobb Brewer; sister, Susan Lynn VanBrederode; and cousin, Kirby Sellers.
Dale is survived by his daughters, Jennifer Brewer (Barbie Leach) – Charlotte, NC, and Julie Brewer Hancy (Stephen); grandson Stephen Foster Hancy, granddaughter Anniston Deer Hancy – Gulf Breeze; stepmother, Myra Barlow Brewer – Pensacola; and siblings, Patrick Brewer, Kimberly Brewer Hudson, and Tami Lynn Toney – Pensacola.
Memorial contributions may be made to American Red Cross (NW Florida Chapter, Disaster Relief Fund), No Kid Hungry, or NW Florida Wildlife Sanctuary, Pensacola, FL in Dale's name.
The family would love your stories and fun memories in our guestbook.
