Walter Allen Gunkel, age 85, passed away on Friday, July 21, 2006. He was a life long resident of San Antonio and a 1951 graduate of the University of Texas at Austin College of Engineering. Walter is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Dorothy; daughter, Ann Marie Allega of London, England, two grandchildren, Brady Espey and Austin Allega, and his sister, Dorothy Herndon. He is preceded in death by his brother, John Wilbur. Walter served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II and was also a member of Station X in England. He was stationed in the Philippines and Japan. Walter worked for several companies: IBM, Southwest Research and NDT Systems before venturing into his own business where he manufactured inspection equipment for oil pipelines. He was an innovator, holding several patents in this field. Walter was an avid guitar player since the age of twelve, an Eagle Scout, held an E-Class license in Ham Radio and loved to paint and draw.
