Walter Nelson Harvey, beloved husband for 59 years of Rita M. (Saunders), passed away on Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at the age of 79.
Born in Westerly, R.I. on Oct. 4, 1936, Walter was the son of the late Charles and Freda (Holland) Harvey.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four loving children, Anita Bingham and her husband, Leo, Pamela Harvey, Scott Harvey, and Gregory Harvey; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his sisters, Freda Wanagel and Janice Mullaney; as well as his brother, Gordon Harvey.
He was predeceased by his sisters, Irene Barbara Wall and Ruth Ruddock; and brothers, Charles Harvey and George Russell Harvey.
A 1954 graduate of Westerly High School, Walter was a Navy veteran serving our country during the Korean War. He worked at Electric Boat in the Design Department for 42 years and after retiring in 2000, he volunteered for 10 years with South County Habitat for Humanity. A member of Central Baptist Church for 60 years, he had served on the Board of Trustees, the Elevator Steering Committee and as a Deacon.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, May 11, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main St., Westerly. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 12, at 10 a.m. at Central Baptist Church, 16 Elm St., Westerly, followed by a collation at the church. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Fairview Ave., Hope Valley, R.I. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Central Baptist Church, 16 Elm St. Westerly, RI 02891, or South County Habitat for Humanity, 1555 Shannock Rd. Charlestown, RI 02813. Esther and I noted with sadness,the passing of Nelson Harvey. Knute and I went to school together for 12 years and we were like brothers. He used to stop and help me while I was building my house on Route 3. Our prayers go out to Rita & family. He will be missed.
