WALTER STEAD Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 30, 2003.
Walter Garrison Stead died peacefully at his home in Hillburn, New York on December 29th at the age of 92. He was predeceased by his wife of sixty years, Teresa Kiely Stead. Walter was born November 19, 1911 in the old Hillburn fire hall. Along with being a lifelong resident of the Village of Hillburn, he was the oldest surviving member of the fire department. He was the son of John and Hulda Stead. An avid hunter and fisherman, Walt spent many years on the trails of the Ramapo Mountains. He worked most of his life as a house painter with his brothers Malcom and Alanson (Dutchie) under the contractors name Stead Brothers. He served as a Village Trustee in Hillburn during the 1960s and on the Zoning Board in the 1980s. A longtime member of the National Rifleman's Association, Walter turned in his membership in the mid-80s in protest over the NRA's opposition to the Brady handgun legislation. Walter is survived by his sister Hilda Stead Forshay of Spring Valley; his daughters Joan Stead Grogan of Goshen, Kathleen Stead Shea of Manhattan and Teresa Stead Masterson of Harwich, MA; son Walter Garrison Stead, Jr. (Chuck) of Sloatsburg; his grandchildren Brian Stead Shea and Ammon Michael Shea of NYC, Emmet Aaron Masterson and Kevin Patrick Masterson of San Diego, CA, and Luke Solomon of Sloatsburg; his great-granddaughter Ella Virginia Shea of NYC; his nephew Frank G. Stead of Hillburn; and many other nieces and nephews. Services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 AM at the Scarr Funeral Home, Rt. 202, Suffern. Burial to follow at Ramapo Cemetery. Friends may call on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the funeral home. SCARR FUNERAL HOME Rt. 202, Suffern (845) 357-1137
