Elder Stoll served down the aisle from me and was always cheerful. He greeted me by name and enjoyed working on projects. I miss seeing him and hope his family is proud that he served a faithful mission and contributed much to our work.

Jim was Elder Stoll for the six years I knew him at the Church History Department. However, in private, it was simply Jim. We worked along-side each other in cataloging Church records in the Church Archives. He had a natural gift for organizing and insight. He loved to read about Church History and Doctrine, and that showed in the knowledge of what he was indexing. He would stop and read many of the documents in the collections to the point where I would have to kindly urge him on, "There is more to do," or, "We have twenty more boxes in the Records Center we have to get through!!!" However, we would start many days engaged in our "High Priest" talks, spending time trying to solve all the unsolvable mysteries of the kingdom.
I was his supervisor, as a full-time employee. I was his junior by nearly 25 years. He would kid around that I was the boss, and he was the "private", and he would do whatever I wanted or whatever was needing to be done. I knew very well that he was a retired Army Colonel, but his humility in serving a mission, and doing some very tedious work, showed that he was truly serving our Lord and Savior, and doing it -- not for himself -- but for the Lord and for those in the future (even if the records probably would never be seen by anyone ever again).
I loved those talks with Jim. I loved getting to know him, and to know his belief in the Savior Jesus Christ and His Church. It made retiring early, shortly after I turned 64, one of the hardest things for me. We talked about it many times. We even made a pact, that when I retired, he would leave as well. However, we were looking at me retiring at 65 or so, so when I sprung my early retirement on him it was right after he had told the mission he would work for another year or so. I asked him if he was going to tell them he would quit sooner, and true to form, he said he'd keep working. After I left at the end of September, things just didn't go well for Elder Stoll, and he really didn't put in much time, from what I was told. I guess, as we had agreed, we both ended our service at the Church when we wanted to -- nearly together, at the same time. . ..
