Mr. Walter W. Phinney, 89, of Gloucester died Wednesday August 19, 2015 in Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation after a lengthy illness. He was the loving husband to Therese "Tess" (Powers) Phinney with whom he shared 68 years of marriage. Walter was born April 6, 1926 in Boston, son of the late Christopher H. and Margaret (Roberts) Phinney. He was a resident of Gloucester for the past 56 years and previously resided in Woburn. A graduate of Woburn High School Class of 1944. He was a WW II Army veteran and held the rank of S-Sergeant. Walter worked at the General Electric Company River Works and was in charge of X Raying Turbines for over 25 years until his retirement. He enjoyed playing golf and "reading the spots off the Sunday newspaper". He loved Sunday dinners with his family and he especially cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed classical music, reading, watching baseball and football In addition to his wife Tess, Walter is survived by his eight children William J. Phinney and his wife Andrea of Colchester, CT, Thomas H. Phinney and his wife Wendy of Gloucester, David M. Phinney and his wife Deborah of Lee, ME, John-Stephen Phinney and his wife Jacqueline of Gloucester, James F. Phinney and his wife Joyce of Gloucester, Scott R. Phinney of Gloucester, Daniel L. Phinney and his wife Mary of Gloucester and Maribeth DelTorchio and her husband Bruce of Gloucester, his sister Nancy Brooks of Wilmington, 15 grandchildren Bill, Jr., Alison, Elizabeth, Megan, Bridget, Teagan, Joel, Roarke, Andie-Jane, Brett, Hannah, Sean, Marc, Tyler and Kate, 1 great granddaughter Violet and many nieces, nephews and extended family. The family would like to thank the entire staff at Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation especially Ernie Watson who took great care of Walter during his time there. Private Graveside Services were held in Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester. The family has asked for donations in Walter's memory to be made to the Wounded Warrior Project 150 Cambridge Park Drive, Suite 202 Cambridge, MA 02140.
