Ward Farnsworth Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 7, 2014.
Ward Farnsworth, 83, died at home in Winnetka on December 3, 2014. The cause was complications from congestive heart failure. Ward was born on March 28, 1931, the son of Eber Ward and Mary Meyering Farnsworth. He grew up in Libertyville and Lake Forest and graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy and Yale University. Following two years in the Marine Corps, he obtained a law degree from the University of Chicago. His career spanned more than three decades at The First National Bank of Chicago, heading up the Personal Trust Division, Private Clients Group, and Fiduciary Services. He served for many years as a Director and Treasurer of the Chicago Bar Foundation and Jobs for Youth, and was also a long-serving board member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Winnetka. Ward was an avid hiker and reader. Over the years he hiked hundreds of peaks in the Adirondacks, the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and the Green Mountains of Vermont; he often said that he could be happy with nothing more than a pair of hiking boots and a library card. At various points in his life he was also an aficionado of military history, motorcycles, well-made firearms, and 1920's jazz. He was, above all, a man of the highest integrity, and a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He leaves his wife, Jean (nee Magoun), of fifty-five years, their three children, Mary (Reid) Marsh of Hong Kong, Lucy (Jack) Taylor of Norwich, Vermont, and Ward Jr. (Janet) of Austin, Texas, and nine grandchildren: Henry, Margaret, Charlie, Clayton, and Freddy Marsh, Franklin and Nora Taylor, and Annie and Sam Farnsworth; and his sister Ann (Ricardo) Mestres of New York. A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 22, 3 PM, at Christ Church, 784 Sheridan Road in Winnetka. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Greater Chicago Food Depository, 4100 W Ann Lurie Place, Chicago 60632 (chicagofoodbank.org), or the Salvation Army would be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to Cremation Society of Illinois. For info 800-622-8358.

Dear Jean,

Yu may remember me as the young man who took care of the family lawn in Cambridge. I have finished a short essay on your father and wondered if you would like to read it.

Ihope this note finds you well.

Sincerely,

Richard G. Lyons

Dear Farnsworth Family:

I will always remember working with and for Ward while at The First National Bank of Chicago. He was a true gentleman and taught us all how to be ethical and fair in all that we do. Please accept my sympathy and know that Ward affected many people in a very positive way. May he rest in peace.

My deepest condolences. Ward was a friend and mentor during my years at the First National Bank of Chicago, and we always looked to him for ethical guidance. My favorite story was his craving for ice cream, finding it, and eating it with his bare hands in Virginia during a hiking trip on the Appalachian Trail.

I am sorry to hear of Ward's passing. I remember both Dad and cousin Ralph always speaking fondly of him and believe I only met him once many years ago when I was a small boy at a family reunion. Please accept my deepest sympathy.

I worked with Ward, although not directly, at the First National Bank of Chicago. The man had my full respect and admiration. Condolences to you and your family.

Dear Jean and Family,

You most likely do not know me. I began working for Ward in 1981 as his trust assitant. I was a business grad from U of I and I had worked in the Trust Dept at LaSalle Bank under Bill Vonder Heide (my father-in-law and head of Probate at LSNB at the time). I cannot tell you how much I learned from Ward and what a great mentor he was to me. I learned all about irrevocable trusts, beneficiaries, discretionary distributions and plans of distribution (on death). I always referred to him as "Mr. Farnsworth". When I was promoted to a Trust Officer, he stopped me in the hall one day and said, "Susan, you can call me Ward." I will never forget that day - I did call him Ward from that day forward but he was always "Mr. Farnsworth" to me deep down. My success today is truly a reflection of what I learned under his tutelage. Rest in Peace, Mr. Farnsworth, you will always be remembered fondly. Susan Vonder Heide
