One of the most talented people I ever had the pleasure of working with. I absolutely adored you. Kathleen, I am so very sorry for your loss. Winston, please know that your Dad worked really really hard and was super good at making magical things happen and everybody liked him and looked up to him. He was one of my heroes. With my most heartfelt condolences...

In 1993 I was a young Technical Director at NY City Opera in search of an assistant, and the Helmsley Lighting Intern, Jeff Croiter, had a roommate. Along with another, they lived in a shoebox on Bleecker for $1,500 a month each. It was over a bar however, so they felt they had a deal on their hands.
Warren Katz was an exceptional Technical Director. After a short while with NYCO I remember praising him with you're the best, at which he shot back second best. That balance of charm and integrity made for a pretty good beginning. What was initially a great assistant boss relationship ultimately became the best of friendships. We worked together under Donald Hassard and Sherwin Goldman. We managed the stage of the State Theater together with Frank Lavaia and Tom Maher. We played golf and smoked cigars, went to Saratoga and Centerline and North Bergen. 1993 to 1998 were particularly good years for me. It was a great time for a lot of us. Thank you for that Warren. You're truly the very best. There is no end to how much you are missed. Take care, comb your hair.
Love, Chuck
