Warren Withrow Obituary

Published by Inside Bay Area News on Sep. 7, 2014.
Warren Withrow
May 2, 1966 – Aug. 21, 2014
Former Alameda Resident
Warren was born at John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek, the son of Peggy and Bill Withrow. He attended school at Saint Barnabas, Encinal and Alameda High Schools (Class of 1984) and Santa Barbara City College. As a Navy Brat, Warren lived in Bremerton, WA, San Diego, Concord, MA, Anandale, VA, Camp Hill, PA, before coming to Alameda and then to Los Angeles, Charlotte, NC and then back to Santa Monica. That varied geographical background played into his personality. He married the love of his life Alessandra Bonaccorsi in Positano, Italy and they produced the pride of his life, his son Chase.
Warren was a highly intelligent, articulate, sensitive and handsome young man, with a wonderful sense of humor. He was an inveterate and classic story-teller. He had a great imagination and was very creative in composing stories for the amusement and enjoyment of a broad spectrum of people. He loved reading and discussing some of the very esoteric aspects of nature and the history of our family ancestors. He enjoyed fine poetry and was a patron of the arts in general. He loved playing hockey in New England and soccer in Alameda. He worked as a crew member of a number of sailing vessels off the coast of Santa Barbara, including a number of races to Catalina Island and Hawaii.
Warren was involved in a number of very unique business ventures, including many with his older brother Ted. They joined together to develop an internet web site, called Simply Family, that was unfortunately well ahead of its time. Their concept went on to become the basis of what is now Face Book. He was very instrumental in the conceptual development, branding and promulgation of the cartoon character Danger Ranger that is structured to sensitize young children with the dangers associated with common behavior in everyday life. He developed a company called Couponicate and then Neuralytic to digitize the coupon industry and to acquire direct marketing intelligence. His conceptual initiatives in digitizing coupons truly revolutionized the grocery industry. The process is now copied by many of the largest chains in the country. Working with and applying advanced technology to situations in a complex environment came very naturally to him.
Warren apparently slipped and fell in a bathroom, an accident that is all too common. It is something that is stressed by the Danger Ranger.
Warren is survived by Alessandra and Chase, his father Bill, and siblings Dell, Ted, Nicole and Kyle and a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be truly missed by all who knew him.
A celebration of his life will be held at a family conclave in Southern California.

I remember back in the 1990's when John was going out to the LA area for work a number of times a year that I would go with him just to be able to spend some time with my cousin Alessandra and her husband Warren. Can't forget Reggie too! We had such a great time with the them as they took us to see all of the typical touristy places like the "Hollywood sign", the Observatory and Gladstone's on PCH 1. We even saw the famous courthouse in Santa Monica where the OJ trial was held. The business that Warren and his brother ran was in a beautiful office building practically on the beach! Not sure how they ever got any work done there. :>) Anyway, having a native Californian in Warren as our tour guide was wonderful as he always knew where to go and the best ways to get there. Not always an easy feat given the LA area traffic!

Once Alessandra and Warren moved to NC, I stopped going to CA with John, but started going to Charlotte to see them. Having Aunt Nancy, Uncle Burt and their family there made it even more of a reason to visit NC as often as we could. I remember when Chase was born and how much of a proud father Warren was. Chase was clearly the apple of his father's eye.

Next it was a trip for us to Sicily in 2013 with "my" Alessandra, John and I the summer before she went off to college out of state. It was great meeting up with Chase and "big" Alessandra and the family in Sicily on the beach. I still laugh when I think about the time we all went out on the boat with Andrea driving and Chase wanted to go in the water, but his mother was worried about it being safe, so she made up a story about shark attacks.. "Sharks, in these waters, are you crazy mother?" , Chase told her. Too funny.

I always though that Warren was a highly intelligent, hard-working and kindhearted man that absolutely adored his family. He was what my father used to call "a good man", which sounds pretty simple, but from my dad, about as high of praise as there can be. I will always remember both of them fondly as both of them were truly good men.

Warren was the love of my life, I met him when I was 15 years old on a trip to California with my family. We got married when I was 22 and he was 29. During our 14 year marriage we did everything together, laughed, worked, we moved cross country. The pain of his loss will never go away. Just a month before he passed we were having a deep conversation on a patio in an evening in July in Santa Monica and he told me if I should die now I would be ok because I lived a very full life. He said I married the love of my life, I had a wonderful son and I had incredible business ventures, if my life should end I would be ok. That to a degree gives me comfort although its still very hard to accept his passing. He wasnt done, not even close especially for Chase, his son. He would have been a wonderful role model and a super fun dad. We miss him deeply every day. He was a very special man.

Ive known few people in my life as generous of spirit, fun loving, and eternally kind as Warren Withrow. He was best friends with my brother since they were 10 years old. And our whole family loved him like he was our own. He had a beautiful laugh and an even bigger, brighter more vibrant smile. His hugs were always so warm and welcoming. This world was a better place because he lived. I hold him so deeply in my heart and I will miss him forever. The greatest tragedy of his passing too soon is that he did not get to see his most cherished and beloved son grow up. Family, his son, meant everything to him. I do believe he is watching from above and I know he must be beyond proud of his Chase. Rest in peace Warren. You remain a most beautiful soul and you will always be so very loved.

I remember how excited Warren was when his son Chase was about to be born. On his way to the hospital, he came by my place to leave their dog. He could hardly contain himself; he was so concerned about Alessandra and the well-being of his newborn son; he adored them and was so pleased to have this family!

Warren was a generous man, with his time and advice. A true entrepreneur with a spirit that was focused and always positive. He was an experienced business man who gave of his time, even when not in his own gain. Supported his wife and loved his coffee! Warren had a joie de vivre that was focused on success, but appreciated people and loved to engage with others, sharing his passion for life. He was like an older brother to me, open and kind. He loved his wife and wanted only the best for his family...so much left to share. R.I.P friend.

I only met Warren a few times, he was always kind and always had a smile. May he be the bright light that shines down and watches over you and Chase.

Grazie Warren.

Bill, I just read of Warren's death. I am so very sorry. Although I never met him, we did talk by phone several years ago. He shared my dad's name, thanks to you, and seemed special to me for that reason. Jack and I hold you in our thoughts and prayers.
