Wayne Douglas Chapman, 86, peacefully passed away on October 15, 2022 surrounded by his loved ones. He was a well-loved man who loved well. On January 17, 1936, Wayne was born to parents Dale and Marian Chapman. In 1953, Wayne met his high school sweetheart Nancy, and they were married in 1958. An All-State athlete, Wayne graduated from Homer High School in 1954. Continuing as a student-athlete in track and cross country, in 1958 he completed his degree at Albion College. He then completed his Master's at Western Michigan University. Wayne spent the next 36 years teaching and coaching students at Marcellus, Athens, Homer, Springfield, and then finished his last four years at Battle Creek Central. His legacy has earned him nominations to the Hall of Fame in both Homer and Battle Creek Central. In retirement, he continued his love of people, history, and teaching by serving as a docent at the Kalamazoo Air Zoo. He also served at the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen, and was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as a trustee, elder, deacon, and usher. During 64 years of marriage, Wayne and Nancy had three children, Paul (Lori) Chapman, Lisa (Bill) Morrow, and Jana (Pete) Groothius. Their family grew to include six grandchildren: Mallory (Adam) Smith, Taylor (Josh) Sundell, Bailey Chapman, Matt (Nicole) Morrow, Amy (Cassidy) Schroeder, and Andy Groothius. The joy continued with seven great-grandchildren: Henry, Charlie, Breckyn, Braylee, Braxton, Nancy, and Jack. All survive him. He is also survived by his sisters Lynne Hatter, Susan (Lyn) Turner, Julie (Mark) Edwards, and several nieces and nephews. In Heaven he has now joined his parents, stepmother, three brothers, and two of his sisters. Family was his greatest joy. With them, he shared his passion for gardening, traveling, and hiking, and was his grandchildren's number one fan at every one of their sporting events, recitals, concerts, and activities. A celebration of his life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Battle Creek on Saturday October 22, 2022. A visitation in the parlor will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by a memorial service in the sanctuary at 11:00 a.m. All are welcome to a luncheon in the church fellowship hall directly following the service. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to First Presbyterian Church, or the Kalamazoo Air Zoo. Arrangements by the Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care. I am deeply saddened by Wayne's passing. He was always a friend of m8ne and Carlene. We shared like birthdays Jan. 17th. My son Gavin who was in his class always told about him throwing a power cord plug at a socket expecting it to go in. Jerry

Some of my fondest memories growing up involved the Smokey Mountains and hanging out with Wayne around a camp fire, telling stories, eating breakfast together, or hiking the "Man Way" on the chinneys.
I can only imagine the mountains he gets to hike in Heaven.

Mr. Chapman was my absolute favorite teacher for all time. I had him for several classes at Springfield High School. His friendship with another teacher, Frank Isaacson was well known. One time Mr. Isaacson took his whole class into the courtyard that was located in the center of the school and lined them up to look through the windows at Mr. Chapman's class (which I was sitting in at the time). Not even blinking an eye, or breaking his lecture on history, Mr. Chapman calmly walked over to the windows and pulled the curtains closed and continued as though nothing had every happened.
Later in life I was privileged to see Mr. Chapman in church, at the Battle Creek Symphony Orchestra, and Leila Arboretum. What a wonderful human being.

I had Mr. Chapman as a teacher at Springfield 1974-1977. He was awesome, always had a smile on his face and ready to teach his students about the world. One of my favorite teachers. Rest in heaven Mr. Chapman.

Mr. Chapman was a great teacher and coach at Athens. Later on in my life I did my student teaching at Springfield High. He was a much appreciated familiar face to help me feel welcome there. He was a fine man. I always enjoyed his strong family ties. He was a just fine man, the kind we need more of. Heaven is a better place having him there. He was a wonderful teacher, loved pranks.giving and taking. I toilet papered his room one year during my time at Springfield. He left it all during the next school day. I had in for the last class of the day. Brings a smile to my faces remembering it. May you find peace from love of his students.
Thoughts and prayers.

Mr Chapman had a huge positive influence on my life at Springfield HS from 1975-1978. He was my football coach and teacher. He coached and taught with integrity, character and of course humor. He earned respect by the integrity, character and fairness he showed towards everyone.

Funny story. One day in his classroom I asked to go to the bathroom. We had bathrooms in the classrooms back then. He said sure go ahead. Well when I came out, the everyone was gone. He snuck all of the students out and hid in another room

So sorry for your loss of a very special man.

Dear Chapman Family
Robyn and I send you our condolences through this time of sadness. Wayne was a great teacher a great mentor a great coach and a great man. I had the pleasure of having Wayne as my teacher for a World History as well as a Football and Basketball Coach
at Springfield 1971 in 1972. In addition I had the opportunity to officiate basketball with Wayne on several occasions and enjoy every moment he and I were on the court. He will be greatly missed by all those whoever interacted with him whether it was in the classroom on the basketball court or in just in Life. May he Rest In Peace in his eternal ever after.
