I recently read with shock and sorrow of Wayne's passing. My condolences to Viv and family
I have fond memories of a lifelong friendship with Wayne which started when we taught together at Sutherland School. Over the years we shared camping trips to Pike Lake and Kingsmere, weeklong whitewater canoeing on Clearwater River and hunting trips. All these adventures demonstrated what an a caring and resourceful person he was. What a great loss to all who knew him.

While searching the internet this evening I read of Wayne's passing. I knew Wayne as a BB player and friend of mine, a very caring person, who was a large help and support when we lost our son while living in Saskatoon, there is so many touching stories I could tell of Waynes kindness and leadership. I am truly touched that you lost your husband and a hugh part of your family. Keep the faith as I will keep Wayne in my prayers. with deepest sympathy.

My boys had the privilege of having Wayne as their principal at Forest Grove School. I never saw him wear a suit at school but then it would interfere with him going out to play with his students at recess. He seemed to know each and every student by name and took interest in all. Jonathan has cerebral palsy but Wayne found innovative ways to include him in activities. We will forever be grateful to him. Our sympathies to his family .(Did he outlive his birthday goat?)

I first saw Wayne playing b'ball for the U of S in my first year of 1970. Needless to say, he was very competitive, determined, and blessed with ample skill. I attended most games and admired his commitment to the program. I completed my B of Ed in 1975 and joined the Public System that fall. Unfortunately, our paths never crossed the same school staff circle over my career. However, when we did see each other over the years, it was always a positive conversation, wave or ? After attending Wayne's ceremony, I left with a feeling that I really missed something by not working alongside him at one of the schools where he was a teacher, vp, or principal. I think it was destiny that he ended up in a career where he could positively affect so many lives. Rest in peace, Wayne. My condolences to Vivia and family.

We were so saddened to hear of Wayne's passing. My children were fortunate to have him as principal for most of their years at River Heights School. Wayne was well loved and deeply respected. He had an amazing rapport with the children and obviously loved them. The world is diminished for his loss; but, having said that, his family's loss is so much greater. Please accept our deepest condolences on the loss of this wonderful man but know, and maybe take comfort, that in his lifetime he affected and improved the lives of so many others.

I was lucky enough to be a student of Wayne's at River Heights. We butted heads at times because we were both very strong willed people. In the end, Mr. Dyck convinced me to join Voyageurs. I learned so much from him and will always be grateful to have had him as a principal.

We were saddened to hear of Wayne's passing. He was well respected for his sports involvements, and his professional teaching career. Wayne and his family had significant influence on our son, Kris, through Kris's friendship with Tyson, and Wayne's positive influence on him through his dedication to sports, particularly basketball, as he did with all young people.
He will be greatly missed, and greatly remembered.

I had the privilege of working with Wayne as a TA in 2016. He was one of the kindest, most patient, and most understanding people I've ever known. He brought out the best in those around him, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from him. The world is poorer for having lost him, but so much richer for all the time he was here.

Very sad to hear-a great family man who gave so much to the community in so many diverse ways. In particular the teaching profession has lost a true legend and inspirational leader. I will be thinking of Wayne at upcoming BRIT 50 in January. He was honored as the BRIT Special Guest in 2005.

Wayne met me at a place in my career where I was chalk full of ideals and completely lacking in experience. He saw and brought out the best in me. I received dozens of hand written thank you's and words of encouragement from him in the two short years he was my principal. I remember his famous "If you are in the room, be in the room." I still tell my students this. All the time! Wayne was a servant leader. He told us when we were dealing with a difficult student and had to dole out a punishment or consequences, that we ought to work alongside them. He told us that it would be an opportunity to develop a relationship with the student so that this connection would help heal their brokenness. I Remember the training sessions for our Voyageurs canoe club. I Remember running at lunch and after school up that awful hill. I remember Wayne racing the grade 8 boys! And beating them! I remember seeing fire flies for the first time on our Voyageur's trip to Batoche. I have so many amazing memories, but above all, I remember feeling inspired in a way I had not experienced before. Suffice to say, Wayne has shaped the educator I am today. I am incredibly blessed to have experienced his leadership at such a pivotal point in my career and life.

I fondly remember Mr. Dyck as my vice-principal at Confederation Park in the 80's. He would make a point of saying hi to you in the hallway and made sure see how your day was going. He let every student know that they mattered.

I was so sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Dyck. He truly was "larger than life" and he will be missed by the many, many people he touched during his lifetime. Wayne was the principal at River Heights School when my children attended. He had the ability to make kids feel special, to entertain them in an educational way and yet hold them to a high moral standard. When Wayne invited Erin, our daughter, to attend the ceremony where he received Citizen of the Year she felt like the most important girl in the world. Mr. Dyck had a way of doing that, of empowering children and boosting their confidence. Erin and Wayne shared a yearly DQ date for years and there were many pails of cookies and trays of butter tarts that made their way from her kitchen to his office. The last pail of cookies she shared with him was at the College of Education as he inspired her to become a teacher.
I can guarantee there isn't a student from River Heights that doesn't think of Mr. Dyck every Hallowe'en as they recall the capers of the infamous " Pillowcase Gang".
My condolences to his family and thank you for sharing this incredible man with so many children and families.

It would be impossible to measure the amount of impact Mr. Dyck had on the lives of those around him. I was lucky enough to have had him as my elementary school principal for four years. 3-kilometer lunch time runs and grey owl canoe trips are memories I will treasure always. I remember Mr. Dyck reminding us during camping trips to leave our campsites in a better condition than when we found them. I think that is how he lived his life, he left the world in a better condition than when he found it. He gave more back to his communities than he took. I am so privileged to have known him and so grateful for the morals he instilled. His warmth and compassion for others was contagious.
Sending my deepest condolences to his family. May the pride that you feel in the amazing man that he was carry you through.

The "soul" is one of the words you can use to talk about the innermost being, the essence of who you are.
Wayne Dyck had & has a wonderful soul!
He was my teacher at Sutherland School in 1975. He gave me an old leather basketball on the last day of grade 8. I played more 21 games that summer....
I remember taking my daughter to her first day of school at Forest Grove School and there was Mr Dyck. He said: Oh man now I feel old! Oh course he looked exactly the same! What a fantastic Principal. I would bump into him here & there and did again this year on the river 42 years after first meeting him. I just had to say something to his family to convey how many lives he touched in a positive way! Here's one more person who is grateful to have met your husband, father, grandfather.
So very sorry for your loss.

I first encountered Wayne when I was in grade 11 and playing pick up basketball in the old Phys Ed building at U of S. On Saturdays the gym was full of kids playing basketball and often some senior men's players would get games going on one of the courts. Wayne and Roger Ganes always invited me to play even though I was a kid. Wayne was always friendly and encouraging me as I went through high school, often offering tips, usually about building my confidence.
So when I joined the Huskies and we had our fist alumni game, I was happy to see Wayne warming up getting read to play against us. For some reason it seemed he had missed when I said "Hi" before the game. Wayne was a tiger that game fighting for every rebound, pushing us under the hoop, telling other alumni that I could not guard them. etc. In short being the competitor all of us know. After the game when we shook hands he was again the friendly calm guy, and with remarkable detail told me, and the other young players, good plays we had made. This sums up Wayne in in many ways. The kindest, friendliest guy, but also a fantastic competitor. Many people offer praise, but Wayne was so specific, and accurate you knew it was genuine, and it meant so much. I am sure the same attention to detail and careful thought made him a great educator.
As I moved through basketball, and became a teacher Wayne was one of the few universally respected teachers and administrators. I worked with him closely when he supervised interns at the U of S. I had one intern that was if anything over-confident and another that did not realise how good she was. It was great to watch Wayne cut one down to size, and then build up the other, with the same positive demeanour. and gentle manner.
Wayne will be missed, he was one of a kind.

I offer my condolences to Wayne's family. Wayne had a zest for life and a true passion for education. He was the professor for one of my education classes.
Wayne was one of those teachers that you never forget. He had a special way of getting to know each of his students. Wayne was a very easy going, but compassionate man. It was through storytelling, that Wayne talked about his many life experiences. Wayne always focused on the positives in life and remaining optimistic. As an educator, I will never forgot what Wayne taught me about the importance of developing relationships with students.

A few years ago, my sister, Ida Nerbas, asked me if I would host Wayne in our home as he cycled through Portage la Praire, Mb. on his trek across Canada. This was an experience our family will always remember, and treasure. During the afternoon, Wayne spoke at our granddaughters school. It was very obvious he had made an impact In the minds of these girls as they insisted on coming for an evening visit so they could talk with him and get the answers to their many questions. Dear Viv and family,
I am so saddened to hear of Wayne's passing. What a truly remarkable man who touched the hearts of so many. I feel so lucky to have had his guidance as my principal during my first full year of teaching. We were able to remain somewhat in contact, usually at the annual Terry Fox run where I saw him most recently. That was just last month; he was out enjoying a run on a beautiful fall day and telling me about Desiree's recent wedding. I will happily remember him that way...enjoying nature, loving his family, and pushing himself for not only personal benefits, but also for the greater good. He will be deeply missed!

I had just changed schools and he introduced himself to me in my classroom and made me a bet that if I made the honor roll at the end of the year, he would give me a Big Gulp and I accepted that bet. Sure enough, I forgot about this bet but Mr. Dyck didn't. Final day of school at the assembly, he presented me that Big Gulp on stage during the last assembly. I will never forget the wonderful principal he was and what a fun year we had especially the Grey Owl Canoe Club. My thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time.

It's with great sadness that we learn of Wayne's passing. He was such a bright, positive and charismatic man that made an impact in so many lives, particularly those who were close to Tyson. I am truly fortunate to have been able to know him and see the resilience in the Dyck family. Much love and light to all the family and friends.

Vivian, Tyson, Desiree, Cody and family. So sorry to hear of Wayne's passing - his zest for life, compassion and commitment to students & athletes and love for his family were incredible qualities. I have many fond "court" memories as he supported your athletics. My son Riley has a newspaper clipping of himself and Wayne as he was able to present him with a cheque on behalf of River Heights to support the cycling effort for cancer research - his charismatic smile and huge heart shine in the photo! May you find comfort in all the wonderful memories we all share.

I'm a first cousin to Wayne and his siblings. We did not meet often, but I can see why he was so well liked. I especially remember Wayne in our group of younger male singing groups at our 'Dycks Unlimited"family reunions. My sincere condolences to the Dyck family.

There are instructors that students never forget, they inspire, motivate, encourage, empower each person they teach and leave a foot print in their lives forever, Wayne was that instructor for his Itep students in Onion Lake..a remarkable man that we will never forget..
