WAYNE HASSINGER Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 1 to Jan. 3, 2015.
HASSINGER
WAYNE D.
Beloved son, husband, father, and grandfather, died peacefully in his home at the age of 67 in Mashpee, Massachusetts, on Saturday, December 27, 2014. He was born August 18, 1947, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to the late Donald Hassinger and survived by his mother, Adaline (Drake) Hassinger. His greatest achievement was when he fully gave his life to the Lord, and was baptized on August 30, 2009, at Dowses Beach in Osterville, MA in front of his family and friends. He loved his Lord, his sweet wife, and family with all his heart. Wayne attended the Osterville Baptist Church on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. In addition to his father, Donald Hassinger, he was preceded in death by his brother, Doug Hassinger. He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Joyce Pillsbury Hassinger; his mother, Adaline Hassinger; and his three siblings, Lois Yerxa, Christine Pennington, and Lynn Hagerty; two special children, Aaron Hassinger and Anne (Hassinger) Cawthorne and their spouses; and five beautiful grandchildren, Lucas and Abigail Hassinger and Matthew, Kaitlyn and Avery Cawthorne. He loved attending his grandkids' sporting events and was always the first to call them on the phone to encourage them and let them know how proud he was of them. He was also a caring uncle to wonderful nieces and nephews from both sides of the family. Wayne's passion for teaching the students in the Bethel Park Public Schools for over 25 years gave him great joy. He received a service award in recognition of 25 years of dedicated service to the Bethel Park School District. At 6'4", many referred to him as a "Gentle Giant". He also coached basketball and was very proud to see many continue playing and coaching at higher levels. Wayne lettered in many sports when he attended Bethel Park High School and was proudly inducted into the Eastern Nazarene College Hall of Fame for baseball from 1965-1969. He was a lover of all sports and was fondly referred to as "Tree" and "First Baseman Supreme." He was loved by all, a friend to every stranger, loved his family fiercely, and took every opportunity to encourage others and to share his testimony. Friends, family, students, and the teachers he worked with for many years may visit on Friday, January 2, 2015, at 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, January 3, 2015, from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. at JEFFERSON MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, on 301 Curry Hollow Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15236. And a celebration of life will be held on Sunday, January 4, 2015, at the South Hills Church of the Nazarene on 5601 Library Road in Bethel Park at 4 p.m. Wayne, otherwise known as husband, son, brother, friend, Dad, and Pop Pop, will be greatly missed. But as Wayne quoted many times "No guilt in life and no fear in death." He loved his Heavenly Father and is resting in His hands now. Flowers may be sent to Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home at the address above. In lieu of flowers, you may donate to the Diabetes Foundation or Eastern Nazarene College.

My first memories of Wayne were listening to him talk about his 4th grade students with such enthusiasm and care. Being a fellow educator, I sensed that he really knew how each child learned and was determined to do whatever it took to assure that child's success. His love for. His own children was evidenced by the light in his eyes when he was with them. His adorable wife and my dear friend, Joyce, was the delight of his life. I remember so many times how she was at his school room helping. While we only lived in pittsburg for 3 years, our families visited each other through the years. When my husband and I visited a few years ago, Wayne was so excited to share his new found depth in Christ. I treasure all the wonderful memories of a great man. My deepest prayers and love are with Joyce, Aaron, Anne, and family.

Wayne was a childhood friend. He was a nice guy even back then. We graduated from Bethel High School together and our paths crossed many times as we both raised our kids here. My husband, Bill Kossan, played a lot of baseball with Wayne. We were both saddened to hear of his passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. RIP Wayne.

Mr. Hassinger was a kind and thoughtful man, a wonderful teacher to me 35 years ago. He took great care to encourage students whom he recognized as needing something extra. My thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.

Wayne Was a great teacher who made a difference and truly made learning fun! I believe I was in his inaugural teaching year at McMillan school ( I am 52).-- he brought a great competitive style from his college athletic days to the class room. From after school sports to his version of the math Olympics-- he was an exceptional teacher I will not forget.

My heart is heavy after hearing the news about Mr. Hassinger. He played a huge part in my devolpment as a child and his life long messages I've carried w/ me on and off the basketball court. Not too many teachers I can say I've had a positive experience w/ but Mr. H was clearly different than the rest. This man saw potential in a young man that didn't see much within himself and I thank him for that. God bless your family and rest in peace .

Wayne Hassinger was a GREAT man. He was my teacher at McMillan School in BP back in the 70's. Back then some teachers did not really care to much for the children. He was a warm. loving teacher who helped me as I struggled in ALL classes. I remember his smile and how patient and kind he was. So young to be taken.......... I just wanted the family to know that at 54 years of age, I still thank God for him and remember him fondly. Peace to your family at this time. May the gentle hands of our Lord and Savior hold you all close.

Thru all of my years in school, Mr. Hassinger was the only teacher who I remember fondly. At 34 years old, I can still remember having him in 4th grade like it was yesterday. No other teacher has left an impact on a lot of students like he did and who could forget Mrs. Hassingers peanut butter fudge when our class was good?!?! The world lost a great man and my heart goes out to his family and friends. God bless you all.
