Wayne MCLEAN Obituary

MCLEAN, Wayne
Passed away April 30, 2018 at the age of 73. Loving husband of Sandra. Adored friend of Larry and Sharon Chalmers. Wayne, most commonly known for his work at CKWW, has been involved with radio in one way or another since he was 15 years old. In 1963 he was CJSP program director as Sunday operator. Wayne then moved on to a position at CFOS Owen Sound, where he stayed for one year before returning to the Leamington radio station. He met Sandra while doing his formal education in Toronto where they started their new life together. Then he was offered a position in talk radio at CKWW. He worked in Windsor, London, Sarnia, Owen Sound, Ottawa, Toronto, Hamilton and Kitchener. During that time he was a pastor with The Gospel Meeting from 1972 - 1977. Wayne taught Communications at the University of Windsor for 2 years and also taught Film Studies at the Walkerville Collegiate and Windsor Library. He spent his last 10 years as a film script consultant. Visitation will be held at Walter D. Kelly Life Celebration Centre on Friday, May 4, 2018 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. The funeral service will take place at the funeral home on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Entombment to follow at Windsor Grove. My sincere condolences Sandra. I knew Wayne from Patterson CI. The last time I saw him for the last time it was at one of the school reunions. He got a separate room to let old friends talk about the high school years. RIP old friend.

Wayne ushered me into my first (and only) radio job at CJSP in Leamington around 1964-5. He introduced me to the station head, Lou Tomasi, and over many days and months, showed me all about radio. We had access to a magnificent music record library, and, inspired by comedy albums of Bob Newhart, Shelley Berman and Avery Schriver, we made dozens of our own (scandalous, raunchy) comedic tapes, and broke out of the narrow confines of small-town culture. On Sunday mornings, I would unlock the ("sunrise to sunset") station, turn on the transmitter, roll "the Queen," and air syndicated programs like The World Tomorrow, with right-wing Christian commentator, Garner Ted Armstrong.
Later, Wayne got the idea that we should make a movie. He found a play called The Visit, a bitter modernist work about small-town corruption and misogyny by playwright Frederick Durrenmatt, and gleaned a shooting script from it. To my astonishment, Wayne asked me to direct the film, launching me on my real career of directing film & television, for over 50 years. Wayne was the star of the film, and he gave a magnificent performance.
The Visit was never finished, because our resources and tech capabilities were non-existent, but in 2003, I offered to complete the film, shooting establishing shots and travelling sequences, adding new music (composed by my son, Sam Allison) and having it professionally restored and edited. The project cost me over $6000, but it was great to bring the project to life after 40 years.
We held a "The Visit World Premiere" in Leamington-Kingsville in the fall of 2005, which was attended by 700 people, including most of the original cast and crew. We had limos, fireworks and free Pelee Island wine! Despite our sharply contrasting beliefs and values, Wayne was a major influence in my life. I shall never forget him. My condolences, Sandra.

I worked with Wayne at CFPL in London, where he brought his unique brand of talk radio, which
was quite successful. He had an excellent instinct for issues that would play well on the air and he knew how to get the most out every caller. Wayne was as entertaining in person as he was on the air. I have many fond memories of the laughs we shared. Sandra, I'm sorry for your loss. He thought the world of you. And he most certainly will be missed.

Dear Sandra, I am so sorry for your loss. Wayne remains an unforgettable soul and I know you made him complete. He spoke of you so much, I told him your relationship gave me hope. To the Mclean family, you are all in my thoughts and prayers. Wayne you were the first one to really believe in me and my movie project. You made me better and challenged me to be the best I could be. You were there for me when I lost my mom and helped to pick me up when I was down many, many times my brother. For our project My Three Angels, in comfort from a friend, I was reminded that you are the 4th Angel watching over all of us and felt in the light we see each day. I will finish this and will enjoy seeing your name on the big screen. Wayne thank you for being my ambassador of kwam, man.

I knew Wayne when he attended F. W. Begley grade school. I also knew his grandfather and mother. We knew when he was in grade school that he would be a good communicator. My condolences to the family. Leona Flatley

I worked with Wayne at CKWW, the Radio Station in the Sky, when it was at the Viscount Hotel. He was very controversial as a talk show host and very good at what he did.
I remember one time, as he being a minister, married two birds, I believe, on air, very funny.
My condolences to Wayne's family may he have a talk show in the afterlife. God Bless.

Wayne was very much a part of my Radio Days at CKWW. In my eyes Wayne was Smart, Innovative and Charming. I met Wayne in late 1979 when he hired me to work Weekends high atop The Viscount Hotel where we had a blast being on Radio and learning from each other. Wayne mentored, inspired and oozed Creativity. I'll forever be indebted for granting me the position he did. A life well lived and thought out. Well done, my friend. Well done

I am very saddened by the loss of Wayne. He was my Program Director at CKJD in Sarnia and later a work colleague at CFPL in London. We kept in touch through Facebook and we were able to meet along with other CKJD veterans a number of times and I am so glad of that. Sandra, I know Wayne's love for you was strong and true. All of his many friends will miss him, but none more than you. I hope all of the messages from his friends can help you through this knowing WaynI worked with him about as a much-loved

I am shocked and saddened to hear of Wayne's passing. He and I were classmates at JC Patterson back in the day. We reconnected when the school reunions were held. When I'd get back to Windsor Wayne was one of the group of classmates who'd meet to share a meal and old times. Rest in peace old buddy. You'll be missed.

Wayne was my best radio friend. He taught me so much about hosting talk shows. He set expectations very high and worked hard to achieve them with every caller. I saw Wayne the day before he passed and he made sure to tell me that I was a good friend. Bill Timpson and I had Saturday breakfast with Wayne for years. Wayne always told us what a great wife Sandra was, how he would have been nowhere without her. Whether pulpit, microphone, or over coffee, Wayne brought goodness and love to the world. I'll miss him forever.
