Wayne Oldham Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 26 to Jan. 31, 2021.
Wayne R. Oldham
3/23/2021 - 1/6/2021
Wayne was born to Achsa Terpening Oldham and Jay F. Oldham in Eugene. He grew up on Moss Street near the University and told many stories of an idyllic youth. Graduating from Eugene High School in 1950, he went on to Oregon State College (University). He studied business, became a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, and graduated in 1954. Summers, Wayne worked picking beans until he became old enough to work for his father as a truck driver and equipment operator, building mill ponds, to pay for his college education. It was a natural fit for him to serve in the Navy Reserve Construction Battalion (Seabees) during and after college. In 1954, he joined his father in the heavy hauling and crane service business. Gradually, he took over the family business with his own brand of hard work and innovation. Wayne retired at age 70, again at age 80, and finally, when he passed away at age 88. His life's work really was his life.
There was more to life than work, however. Wayne had met the love of his life in high school, Caroline Snook. They were married after Caroline graduated from Oregon State in 1956. They had a wonderful life together. They both enjoyed fishing, hunting, snow skiing, travel, and socializing with good friends. A love of the coast led them to a second home in Yachats and its community. The only thing Caroline wouldn't do with Wayne was fly with him when he fulfilled a lifelong dream of becoming a private pilot at age 50. Together they raised a family. A son, John, was followed by daughter Mary. They shared and passed on many of their passions with their children. Caroline passed away the day after Wayne's 80th birthday and his life was forever changed. As his age advanced, Wayne fought hard to live independently in his home of 60 years and did so until a few months ago. While diagnosed with Alzheimer's dementia, it was pneumonia that took him from us.
In addition to John and Mary, Wayne is survived by daughter-in-law Mary Sue, grandson Jake and "adopted" family member Wes Collins. We will forever remember Wayne for his hard work, great storytelling abilities and devotion to family. We are so proud of him and honored to be his family. No services are planned.

Not many days go by without some memory or thought about the friendship that Wayne showed to me and to many others through the years. He was a top notch, thoughtful guy to his family and to those all around him.

Wayne was a true friend from the time we became acquainted at Roosevelt Jr. School, in 1945, when we were in the seventh grade. He was always the one I could depend on to offer help and encouragement when life presented problems as we were growing up. We and our families enjoyed varied activities together through the years and those memories will be forever cherished. He was, and will be my best friend forever.
