Wendy Carroll Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 4, 2015.
SEDGWICK - Wendy Carroll, 58, passed suddenly but peacefully in her sleep Sunday, February 1, 2015. Wendy was born, Wendy Lee Chapman to Robert and Lillian (Sawyer) Chapman of Portland. Robert served in the Navy and Lillian was a homemaker, housekeeper, and all around community connector.

Wendy grew up mostly in Portland, attended Deering High School and spent many summers on Castine's backshore with her grandparents, William and Lillian Sawyer. She fondly spoke of her days riding city buses around Portland with her grandparents and walking the beach in Castine. Early in Wendy's career, she worked in banking and insurance. She was married to Philip Carroll in 1976 and had three daughters. After their divorce, Wendy relocated her family to Sedgwick with her mother, where she spent the next 29 years building a wonderful life. A life she chose for the quiet, small town community, and it's proximity to the ocean.

Wendy spent her best and longest years working at Brooklin Boatyard in the front office. Wendy spoke of her co-workers, some 60-70 boat builders and craftsman, with great affection and took the unspoken role as "boatyard mother".

Wendy was a hardworking woman who was an avid artist and gardener. She dried and painted gourds, created oil landscapes, enjoyed woodworking, and was never idle. Wendy jarred pickles and jellies, was known for her cookies, and grew a garden that kept her busy most of the summer and fall. She walked the village daily and spent hours each year walking the beach in Sargentville.

Wendy's sources of pride were her children and grandchildren. She leaves behind three daughters, Jaime Carroll Stone of Camden, Heidi Carroll Turner of Holden, and Ashley Carroll of Houston, TX. Her five grandchildren, Maddox, Lillia, Ashton, Jaden, and Maya, will miss her greatly. She also leaves behind her brother, James Chapman of Homasasa Springs, Florida.

Please join us in celebrating her life at Barncastle in Blue Hill, on Saturday, February 7th between 1pm-4pm. A graveside service will be planned for this summer in Castine where Wendy will be laid to rest at her mother's side. In lieu of flowers please send donations to one of Wendy's favorite places: Birds Acre in Ellsworth, Maine. Standwood Wildlife Sanctuary (Birds Acre), PO BOX 485, Ellsworth, Maine 04605. Arrangements are under the direction of Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home in Bucksport.www.mitchelltweedie-young.com

We first met Wendy when, at the end of her work day in November 2011, we drove into the Brooklin Boatyard parking lot. Wendy stopped her car and greeted us. Upon learning that we were scouting possibilities for a mooring for the next summer, she gave us a tour of the docks and invited us to return in the morning for a full boatyard tour. We have been BBY customers since. What an ambassador she was for the boatyard. We subsequently purchased a home in Sedgwick Village where we treasured greeting Wendy frequently and stopping to chat. She was a very good friend and neighbor to us. We will miss Wendy greatly and send our condolences to her daughters and grandchildren and to her co- workers at BBY.

Am so sorry to hear about Wendy's passing. As a Brooklin Boat Yard customer, I can only reiterate what I am sure you have heard before, that her presence will be sorely missed. Always welcoming, a distinctive humorous twinkle in her eye and at the corners of her mouth - that was Wendy. Please accept my deepest condolences on your loss....

What a terrible loss for the entire "gang", and of course the family she loved so much. Cuac summed it up totally! She will always be with us.

Wendy & a few of her MANY friends

February 5, 2015

As I said to three other friends of Wendy's in an email yesterday -Peg Gilman, Gordon Garron, and Jimmy Sawyer (who are in this photo with Wendy, along with Tom Snapp and myself) - seeing the obituary made Wendy's passing all the more real. Since learning of the gutwrenchingly sad news, I have said to my wife, over and over and over again:

"I just can't believe that Wendy's gone."

Indeed, things will never be the same again . . . for any of us. The bond of deep and lasting lifelong friendship forged between Wendy and these friends during the formative years of our youth is something that is special beyond words to me - as I know it was to Wendy.

With extreme empathy going out to all of Wendy's family members and a heavy, heavy heart; yet also heartfelt gratitude to God for permitting me the tremendous privilege of having had the wonderful soul who was, and is, Wendy Lee Chapman Carroll, as my dear and cherished friend,
