Werner RUMPEL Obituary

Published by Regina Leader-Post on Apr. 28, 2018.
RUMPEL, Werner "Vern" Werner "Vern" John Rumpel passed away Sunday, April 15, 2018, at the age of 90 years. Werner was born in Arbuthnot, SK on August 11, 1927 to John and Martha (nee Kratzer) Rumpel. In his early years the family moved to Billiman and then Ferland before returning to settle back to the Arbuthnot area. He attended Kramer school and graduated from grade 8 with honours in 1942. Werner often recalled the three and one-half mile walk to school when the horses where being used for farming. As a youngster he worked with his Dad, learning how to break horses, running threshing outfits and fixing machinery. He later used his knowledge and love of horses while logging for a winter in the Ontario bush. Right out of school he went to work as a farm hand for many people in the local area and later at Rowatt, SK. In 1950, Werner started buying grain for the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool. His career spanned 39 years, taking him to Royer, Dendron, Hodgeville, and Vanguard, where he retired. It was while Werner was in Hodgeville that he met and married the love of his life, Myrtle Sthamann on March 4, 1957. He was always involved in the communities he lived in and resided on many community associations, boards and committees. Werner was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a retired Grand Knight, Elks member, a Volunteer firefighter, a Town Councilor, a 4H Club Leader, a Housing Authority board member and active in the Catholic Church. He enjoyed sports and was a big curling fan. Through the years he coached and managed local minor baseball, softball and hockey teams. In 1981 Werner was inducted into the Hodgeville Sports Hall of Fame for his dedication to sports and in 1987 was recognized by the Saskatchewan Hockey Association for his contributions to minor hockey in Saskatchewan. In 2007 he moved to the Victoria Park Care Home in Regina and resided there for eleven years until his passing. He was active in the home and one of its longest serving residents. Werner took care of the flowers and garden, and always helped with meal seating and table preparation. He was shy, hard working, quiet and humble in nature and would do anything for anybody. Werner is survived by his loving family: daughter Judith (Brad) Davie, grandson Justin Davie (Kimberley), great grandson Declan, granddaughter Bretton Davie (Scott Russell), great grandson Cormac, grandson Braden Davie (David), granddaughter Jory Davie; son Roche (Janice) Rumpel, grandson Nevin Rumpel (Ainslee), great-granddaughters Chesney and Rowynn, grandson Matthew Rumpel (Alyssa); sister Adeline Thomas. Predeceased by his wife Myrtle (nee Sthamann) Rumpel (1986); son Wray Rumpel (2002); infant daughter Victoria Rumpel (1959); infant son Werner Rumpel (1960); parents John Rumpel (1968) and Martha (nee Kratzer) Rumpel (1978); brothers Ralph Rumpel (2000), Frank Rumpel (2007); sisters Anella Schlageter (2013), Rose Rumpel (1946), Florence Brazier (2014), Martha Schoenroth (2013), Bernice Rumpel (1939), Eileen Pachkowsky (2015). Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at 11:00 a.m., St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Hodgeville, SK, with Father Hector Seville celebrant. Readers were Werner's grandchildren.
