Wes Watkins Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 27 to Mar. 28, 2025.

Wes Watkins, a former U.S. congressman from Oklahoma who spent time in office as both a Democrat and a Republican, died March 26, 2025 of cardiac arrest in Stillwater, Oklahoma at the age of 86.

After spending time in the Oklahoma National Guard, Watkins launched his political career in 1974, when he won a seat in the state senate. He ran for Congress in 1976, winning as a Democrat and serving in that capacity through 1991. He launched two unsuccessful bids for governor, one as a Democrat in 1990 and another as an independent in 1994. Frustrated by what he perceived as a lack of support from Democrats, in 1996, when he once again ran for Congress, he did so as a Republican. He won, beginning a second tenure in the House that lasted until his retirement in 2003.

"Wes was a remarkable man and had a brilliant career in Congress, serving on two of the House's most powerful committees, the Appropriations Committee and the Ways and Means Committee," Congressman Tom Cole said on Facebook. "I never worked for a more popular figure in a congressional district or a harder working man or a more energetic and effective campaigner than Wes. He was an institution in southeast Oklahoma, serving his constituents ably, honorably, and tirelessly throughout his political career. Wes Watkins may have changed political parties, but he never changed his political principles. He also never lost his passion for public service or let down the people he worked so hard to represent."

Wes and Lou Watkins were highly regarded by my parents, James and Betty Andrews of Vici, having known them for many years. My husband and I, along with my parents joined Wes´s gubernatorial campaign in the 1990s. We enjoyed getting to be a part of that. Wes ran a clean campaign and we learned so much from him. A man of great integrity. He truly cared for his country and fellow man. It was a privilege to know him.
Lou, Martha, Wade and family you are in our prayers.
Rest in Heavenly peace friend.

My wife Rosalie and I moved into Legacy Village 1 1/2 years ago and soon learned that Wes and Lou Watkins were among its most well known and popular residents. Wes authored the book Making Things Better and he was committed to doing that during his long political career and continuous support for the many causes he believed in. Getting to know Wes Watkins has been an honor and privilege. Wes will be missed at Legacy Village, but his memory will live on in the passion he showed and worked for to improve the lives of those in need and the leadership he and Lou have provided for so many years for OSU and the many charities they believed in. Wes, may you rest in peace in heaven my friend.

Mr. Jr.

I first met Wes in 2020, in a men's bible study. I became a part of that group up until the day he passed in to Glory. Part of me died, when Wes died. I'll see you in that place that you so much talked about.

Wes was special to so many people. I have fond memories of serving on Rural Enterprises board of directors. REI was one of pet projects.

I was privileged to know Wes Watkins in his later years. In addition to all the attributes mentioned by Congressman Cole, Wes was a loyal and true supporter of all things Oklahoma State University. Godspeed Wes!

An important man in my past recently passed. A former attorney in Ada, he represented my dad in the custody hearing after my parents divorced. This was in the mid sixties and apparently very few thought he even had a chance to get custody as a single father. Mr. Watkins became familiar with the circumstances. My brother was old enough to tell the court who he wanted to live with but the court decided on my behalf. My father, J. R. Zenker, always spoke highly of him representing the `working man´. Whoever my father respected. So did I.

Condolences for your loss.

I have many fond memories of time spent with Wes and Lou. I know it is not easy to lay an OSU Cowboy to rest, but I am going to remember all the stories of Wes and David´s time in college, and friendship they had throughout their lives. Prayers for strength and comfort for Lou and family.
