Wesley Chen, 26, of Monterey Park, CA, passed away on June 9, 2015 as a result of fatal injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident near Bridgeport, CA on his way home from Lake Tahoe.
Wesley was born in Los Angeles, CA at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on August 26, 1988 to Keyno Shui Chen and Cindy Tse-Chen. From kindergarten through 8th grade, he attended Repetto Elementary School, where he earned a 2nd-degree black belt in tae kwon do and had the privilege of participating in the Junior Olympics. During this time, Wesley also proficiently played the violin. After Repetto Elementary, he attended Mark Keppel High School and played an active role in the high school’s Math Club. In 2006, he was matriculated at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. For his senior design project, Wesley and his teammates collaborated with the ECOLIFE Foundation to develop technology to reduce the need for bushmeat hunting in Uganda, while helping the local inhabitants maintain their diets. Additionally, Wesley joined Alpha Phi Omega, a national co-ed community service fraternity, where he assumed several leadership positions, including one as a choreographer for a dance competition. Soon after his graduation in 2011 from UCSD, he obtained a position as a technical operations engineer with Beckman Coulter, where he had been continually recognized for his hard work and leadership qualities.
Wesley’s hobbies included basketball, cars, shoes, photography and more recently, health and fitness. Three years ago, Wesley weighed 189 lbs with 23.1% body fat. Determined to improve his health, he decided to change his lifestyle by modifying his diet and incorporating a more consistent workout schedule. With strong will and dedication to health and fitness, Wesley decreased his body weight to 162 lbs with 7% body fat – lending to one of his proudest achievements and an inspiration to others.
Wesley is and will always be remembered as a loving and caring son, brother, and friend.
Wesley is survived by his parents Keyno and Cindy Chen, as well as his younger sister Jasmin. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
