Wilfred N. Roberts passed away on Oct. 1, 2004 in the Los Angeles County Hospital, Los Angeles after a short illness.
Wilfred was born in Bogue, Kansas, on June 2, 1925. After serving as a paratrooper during World War II, he went to college and became a teacher. He taught in college and high school in Frederick, Md., and in 1968 he came to Fairfield and was Dean of Students in Armijo High School for one year. When Fairfield High School was completed, he was Dean of Students for the principal of Fairfield High School. After the principal transferred, Wilfred then taught business administration until he retired. Wilfred was selected as Outstanding Educator, April 11, 1974; a Who¹s Who in American Education in the 1970s. In 1963 he received National Recognition for a pilot project in typing in Frederick, Md.
Wilfred was a member of the following organizations: The American Economic Society, Phi Delta Kappa, California Teachers Association, Fairfield Suisun Teachers Association, National Education Association, National Business Teacher Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Boy Scouts Leader¹s Association and was charter member of The San Francisco Chapter of Oceanic Society
Wilfred was adventurous and loved to sail. In 1991, he sailed solo to Hawaii from Southern California then returned to Vallejo. The Daily Republic wrote the article about his adventure. Wilfred lived in Fairfield for 30 years, then after he retired from Fairfield High School, he moved to Wilmington, where he docked his sloop and/or went sailing.
Survivors include his wife, Ysabel, Fairfield; sons, Gregory Roberts, El Cerrito and Phillip Roberts, Marysville, Wash.; daughters, Jerri Lynn Sigman, Everett, Wash., Cynthia and her husband, Tim Montagne, Mill Creek, Wash.; three grandsons, Jeremy Roberts who is in the Marines and just recently returned from Iraq, Brandon McMahon, who is attending University of Denver, Denver, Colo., and Connor McMahon, who is attending ninth grade in Mill Creek, Wash.; three sisters, Corinne Best, Litchfield, Ariz., Irene Bruce, Fairfield, Florence and her husband, Frank Vincent, Hill City, Kansas, and his brother, Thomas and his wife Margaret Roberts, Morris, Ill.; stepdaughter, Dianne Cline and stepson, Leon Clayton, and seven step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Arthur and Cora Roberts, Bogue, Kansas and his sister, Lucienne Morris, Hill City, Kansas.
Services will be held in Wilmington, where his sailing buddies live. Our thanks to Rick Whearty, Long Beach, for the wonderful assistance he gave to his sailing buddy, Wilfred, during his last days. Thanks to everyone who gave him loving care during his last days.
Memorial contributions may be given to the American Heart Association, or the American Cancer Society in honor of Wilfred.
