LEWISTOWN - William Lewis Bannon II, 76, of 211 Summit Drive, passed away at 11:50 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009, at Lewistown Hospital.
He was born Feb. 4, 1933, in Lewistown, a son of the late Charles and Esther (Bingman) Bannon. He was married to the former Judith Heller for 40 years before her passing on Dec. 9, 1999.
William was a 1951 graduate of Lewistown High School, where he excelled at football and basketball under Alex Ufema. After high school, he attended Gettysburg College. He also played basketball and fast-pitch softball for Lewistown area teams.
William was employed by the Arrow Shirt Factory, Lewistown and Elysburg, as a general manager. He also worked for Union Products, Selinsgrove, and Mohawk Flush Doors, Northumberland, as vice president of operations, retiring in 1995.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Lewistown, and a member of the Rolling Rock Athletic Club, Elks Lodge 663, Lewistown, Lewistown Moose Lodge 143 and the Shamokin Dam Fire Company.
William enjoyed morning gatherings with his "Cobbler" pals and weekly dinners with his high school friends. While living in Shamokin Dam, he liked golfing, playing cards and spending time at the cabin with his buddies.
He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Ed Berryman, of Lancaster; one son and daughter-in-law, Matthew and Joann Bannon, of Phoenixville; grandchildren whom he loved dearly, Ryan and Megan Berryman and Nicholas Bannon; his special best friend, Barbara Lash, of Lewistown, and her family, Mike Lash, of Lewistown, Fran Merrifield and husband Mark, of Lewistown, and Randy Lash, of Denver, Colo., and the Merrifield children, Jenny and Doug; one brother, Jim Bannon, of Lewistown; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Wanda Singley, of Killeen, Texas, and his brother, Jerry Bannon, of New Cumberland.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Grace United Methodist Church, 101 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Richard J. Bender officiating.
Interment will be private.
Memorial contributions may be made in William's memory to Grace United Methodist Church, 101 Logan St., Lewistown, PA 17044.
Funeral arrangements are under the care of the Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown.
