Coach was a man's man. It was a privilege to be one of his athletes and learn about wrestling and life under his tutelage. I have enjoyed reading about the various memories, and so here are two of mine.
Coach heard thru the grapevine that, due to my DOB or some bureaucratic technicality, I was having trouble getting scheduled my Jr. year for Driver's Training. Coach graciously offering to train me over 3 days of Christmas Break, just prior to wrestling practice each day .I'm sure he had better, family, things to do, but he made me a priority.
The second memory had to do with being in the right place at the right time. Coach and his tapeworm were hungry in the middle of the school day and he needed someone to hop into his Dodge Charger and do a food run. I was happy to honor his request, that was a pretty cool ride.
I wish the Zimmer Family the very best. Thanks for unselfishly sharing Coach with us for so many years. You are in my prayers.

My sincere condolences to the Zimmer family. It was truly an honor to have played for Coach Zimm. I'm very grateful to have known him. Rest in peace, Coach...

Coach Zimmer was more than a football coach. He taught us to win with humility and lose with our heads held high, and to keep going when the road got tough. Coach may have thought he stopped coaching when we graduated, but nothing could be further from the truth. Some of the things he taught us went way beyond the field.
I appreciated his assistance in choosing a college program, and he remains a favorite memory of my football days.
With sympathy from Doug Sybert and the Sybert family.

Condolences to the Coach Zimmer Family for their loss. Coach was respected and admired by many players throughout the years. We were all influenced by his character on and off the field. His inspiration has been magnified by many of our successes. His philosophy of life lives within each of us and has been passed on through several generations now. Team of 1966 : Class of 67

First of all my deepest condolences for your loss. My grandfather, mother, and father all graduated from Bradley University. My parents (Marjorie Meinen and Wendell Childs) graduated in 1953. I was born in Peoria, IL (1958). I have lived in Minnesota since 1982 and I am a rabid Vikings fan. I read that Mike went to ISU and heard that he was born in Peoria. I heard on the news that Mike's Dad, Bill passed away. I asked my Dad if he had heard of the Zimmer family in the Peoria area. He said he thought Bill played football at Bradely. I looked at Bill's obituary and noticed that Bill did play football at Bradley and also was an assistant coach at Bradley in the late 1950's. My Grandfather (John "Dutch" Meinen) was the Athletic Director at Bradley from 1956 to 1965. He was football and basketball coach for years before becoming the Athletic Director. I realized that Bill probably knew my Grandpa "Dutch" and that Dutch may also have been Bill's football coach and later colleagues. My brother (Gary Childs) was a Sportswriter for the Peoria Journal Star and Chicago papers and probably knew Bill as well. He was also a Bradley alumni. (He passed away 3 years ago.) It is such a small world and it is amazing of how connected we all really are. May peace and love be with all of the Zimmer family during this difficult time.

I forgot to mention in my earlier post that Coach Zimmer was very innovative. I was tackle and on offense we experimented and utilized an "unbalanced line". That is, we sometimes had two tackles next to one another on either the right or left side.
We also had "spread formations". I remember as a tackle lining up as a "wideout". But, the best was as follows: At that time in Illinois high school football a "place kick" could be used instead of a conventional "punt". Well, we had a great place kicker (Gary Pcchnok). So say it is 4th down for us on offense and we were on our own 40 yard line. Coach would have Gary come in as if to kick a field goal (which was impossible from that distance). Gary would kick the ball consistently out of bounds within the opponents 20 yard line. The opposing team then had to take possession where the place kick went out of bounds. It was a brilliant strategy because Gary was expert place kicking for distance and accuracy. I imagine they have long since changed that rule but our Coach was brilliant at strategy. It was always a nightmare for an opposing coach to prepare for what the Lockport Central offense brought to the table.
Rest in peach big guy!!!!!!!

Please accept my condolences to the entire Zimmer family, friends and those who loved and respected him. Coach Zimmer was not only our football and wrestling coach but a mentor to everyone he came in contact with. His half-time inspirational talks not only helped us play to the best of our ability, they motivated us, giving us guidance way beyond the football field and wrestling mats. I feel blessed to have had him as a coach. Rest in Peace my friend and I am looking forward to the day our paths cross again. Wil Burcham (Woodstock, IL)

I'm so sorry to hear about coach Zimmer. He was my football, wrestling and driving coach in the late 60s. Can't and quit was NOT in his vocabulary. He started out the seasons with boys and turned them into men with respect for one another buy the end of the season. I can't say enough about Mr Zimmer how he influenced the rest of my adult life I will truly miss him. RIP my friend. Class of 71.

My condolences to the entire Zimmer family. As my football coach he taught me a lot about being a man and life in general. His drive for excellence and his dedication to the students as well as LTHS was always paramount in his daily walk. Always a straight shooter who called it like it was and gave me the foundation that greatly influenced my careers in the military as well as public and private education. May he rest in piece and may the family know he will not be forgotten. God Speed.

My wife and I have only known Bill and Ann for the last dozen years as neighbors and friends at Vanderbilt CC. "Coach" will truly be missed. When he spoke you listened. Till the very end a fighter, yet would smile in the face of his personal, physical adversity. Its easy to see why he was such an effective leader of young men and a great H.S football and wrestling coach. He will be missed by all his Vanderbilt friends, for sure, and our most sincere condolences go to his loving wife, nurse Ann, and family. Bill & Joan Cooper Naples, FL

Rest in Peace Coach Zimmer. My sympathies to the Zimmer family.
Coach Zimmer was not only a great coach, he was a great psychologist. In 1965 the coach did not like the demeanor of the varsity football team. He proceeded to come to practice wearing a black arm band to symbolize the poor attitude of the team at the point in the season. Well, the strategy worked. Our team doubled our efforts and improved our attitude to the point that Coach Zimmer removed his black arm band in front of the whole team, for which we all cheered.
Coach Zimmer was tough but fair!

My sincere condolences go to the entire Zimmer family. Coach Zimmer coached both my brother and myself in the seventies. I find it hard to express how much he meant to me. As an adult, I have coached numerous youth sports teams of all ages. All the hundreds of kids I coached were affected by Bill Zimmer because I tried to coach them like he coached me. The Zimmer family can take solace in a life well lived and by how much Bill was loved. Godspeed, Coach

Condolences to the Zimmer family and especially to you Mike and your family.
At the time (high school) you don`t think about the impact a teacher or a coach makes on you.
But as you get older and have children of your own, you realize these people helped shape your character.
So I would like to "thank" coach Zimmer for the life lessons learned from the time I had played football for him. And grimace every time I had to put my head down and run right into those linebackers!!
Thank you for the memories, you will be missed.
And Mike...I will be a Vikings fan except when they play the Bears or the Patriots!
Sincerely,
Ed & Adrienne Neer
