William (Brad) Shipp Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 17 to Apr. 22, 2023.
William (Brad) Bradley Shipp Cranston - Shipp,William Bradley ( Brad), 57, of Edgewood RI passed on Tuesday April 4th 2023 at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. Born on May 14,1965 in Chicago IL, he was the son of Jane (Cook) Shipp and the late William S. Shipp, and the partner of Raul Cisneros. Brad grew up in Rumford, RI and attended Moses Brown School where he later served on the Board of Trustees. Brad graduated from Williams College and began his career at the FDIC in networking administration. He later worked in information technology at Fleet Bank, Cox Communications and eventually as the VP for End User Services at Voya Financial of CT.

Brad had a life-long love of sailing and the sea and spent many days cruising Narragansett Bay and beyond in his ketch, Bellerophon. His passion for sailing brought him to the board of the Herreshoff Marine Museum and the America's Cup Hall of Fame in Bristol RI as well as various leadership roles at both Edgewood and Rhode Island Yacht Clubs. He took pride in mentoring young people about sailing and life lessons, including the importance of getting a good education, and remained a friend and valued mentor they could always depend on.

In 2017 Brad purchased an 1800's Victorian home in the Edgewood neighborhood. He chose to be near the bay and the Yacht Clubs that were so central to his life. His passion for history attracted Brad to the Babbitt House property, named after a notable sea captain, and he cared for and appreciated this unique home. He and Raul hosted their friends and created a comfortable and special life on Shaw Ave. In addition to caring for and improving the house, he spent many hours applying his technology knowledge to the security and home automation system, something so complicated no one but Brad could figure out!

As part of his move to Edgewood he embraced many of the community organizations, becoming a major support of the Pawtuxet Village Association, Edgewood Waterfront Preservation Association, and the Pawtuxet Rangers.

Everything Brad did in life he did 100%. As a highly skilled photographer he was the official photographer for the RIYC Ladies Regatta and other sailing events. He frequently took photos for friends at official events and shared his photos with the organizations in the community. His knowledge and love, specifically of British history, was known by many.

Brad was a person of great generosity, kindness, and friendship. He had a terrific sense of humor and a strong "true north". He was colorful and entertaining, smart and exuberant. He was a friend to many, and his absence will be long felt by all.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Pawtuxet Village Association, PO Box 8626 Pilgrim Station, Warwick RI 02888. A celebration of life will be held on May 13th from 2-6 PM at Rhode Island Yacht Club.

I met Brad at a formative time in my life - the summer between graduating high school and beginning college. Torn between taking my last summer of childhood easy and being a productive member of society, I split the difference by posting on the Edgewood Nextdoor page that I was an "entrepreneurial young person looking for odd jobs in the neighborhood to make some cash before starting school." This sentiment must've struck a chord with Brad, as he reached out asking for some help getting Babbitt House ready in advance of his move. One job became two, two became three, and before long I was working with Brad nearly every day that summer. Not only was Brad much more generous than a typical employer, but he provided invaluable wisdom and guidance - more of which than I probably deserved - that I would carry with me throughout college, grad school, and into the beginning of my professional career. Brad and I stayed in frequent touch after that summer ended, and he was likely the reason I was able to intern at Voya two summers later - this was absolutely the jumping-off point for my career and I'm sure I wouldn't be where I am today without his taking a chance on me. Despite my moving away, we still would see each other from time to time when I came back to Edgewood, and I loved hearing about what's new in the neighborhood, his perpetually-improving home automation system, his musings on the current political climate, Merlin and Gandalf's misadventures, and anything else on his mind - Brad had a way of telling a story with such detail and vibrancy that you had to experience to believe. He was a wonderful man, mentor, and friend, and I'll miss him dearly.

To the Raul and the Shipp family.
The write-up said it all. "Brad was a person of great generosity, kindness, and friendship. He had a terrific sense of humor and a strong "true north". He was colorful and entertaining, smart and exuberant. He was a friend to many, and his absence will be long felt by all."
What a great person, taken too soon.
My Deepest Sympathies to you all.
