William Callahan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 29, 2017.
William "Cal" Callahan passed away peacefully at age 73, surrounded by friends and family, on December 20, 2017. Cal is survived by his wife Meredith, daughter Catherine, his three granddaughters Camille, Elsie, and Izabela, son-in-law Matt, two brothers John and Wayne, and his beloved dog Mia. Cal was the son of John and Dorothy Callahan and was born on June 26, 1946 in Lowville, NY. Cal came to Boulder in 1969 to pursue and complete his Doctorate in Geography from the University of Colorado. He worked at Norlin Library for 43 years, where he met his wife and many long term friends. Prior to the library, Cal worked for FEMA on flood management and served in the Air Force as an air traffic controller. He also served on the board of The Center for People with Disabilities in Boulder. Cal was an excellent writer, with great knowledge of weather and sports. Cal wrote for the Daily Camera as a weather historian and was the author of the "Boulder Weather Log," which can be found in multiple research libraries. Cal also wrote for the Colorado Daily, reporting on Rockies baseball in the "Chin Music" column. He also sat in the press box for the Rockies as well as the Avalanche, where he reported on game statistics. Cal was also the columnist for The Daily Camera's "Curb Cuts," which explained with insight and humor the life of being disabled in Boulder. Despite being paraplegic and facing all the complications that come with being disabled, Cal once said "90% of what I've been through has been wonderful, and should engender envy instead of sympathy." Cal fought until the very end with pride, tremendous strength, and undying love for his family and friends. Cal's love for talk radio, baseball, animals, weather, the newspaper, a never ending repository of dad jokes and riddles, his dry and intelligent sense of humor, and his love and dedication to his family, will be so greatly missed. The family is thankful to their extended family and friends who showed great care and compassion to Cal. The family extends special thanks to April Rizzo and the team from Boulder Community HomeCare; Samantha Skul, who helped Cal with his daily needs with particular love and care; and the team at the Boulder Community Health Wound Healing Center, for tending to Cal's medical needs with grace, humor, and love. Here is one of many favorite puns from the weather man of Boulder himself: "There's going to be weather, whether or not." The family has planned a memorial service at 2pm on Thursday 1/18/18 at Chautauqua in the Community House Grand Assembly Hall, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Center for People with Disabilities in Boulder or Canine Partners of the Rockies.

My condolences to Meredith, Cal's family, and to all who knew him.

When I was a volunteer for the Boulder LIbrary's Oral History Program, I interviewed Cal on video about the weather log that he created and other aspects of his life and work. You can listen to this interview by clicking on this link.

Cal shines in this interview. He was a good neighbor to us North Street folks, and he will be greatly missed.

Blessings to you, Meredith, and Catherine
I had the pleasure of working with Cal in the early 80's at Norlin he was one of my favorite people there. His ever present wit was amazing, and I saw his inner warmth under a tougher exterior. His eyes always lit up when he spoke of one of you. When our core Circulation staff (Steve Wrede, Peg Cash, Charlotte Allen, George MacDonald) visited Cal after a back surgery, he seemed grateful but embarrassed by all the fuss he just wanted to get back to work. I loved how his mind was always active he would pull out word lists to add to them homonyms, homophones, homographs and many others! Earning a genuine smile from Cal was an honor. May you find comfort knowing that he made such impressions on others, in person and through his articles. Peace to all of you.

I loved the way his mind worked and the lists he would take out and add to of random things such as homonyms, homophones, and homographs! May you find comfort knowing that he positively touched so many people around him in person and in his articles. Peace to all of you.
