William Charlton Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Jan. 17, 2010.
CHARLTON, William Buckley "Buck", 48, died peacefully, surrounded by family, on January 6, 2010, after a courageous and heartstrong fight with cancer. Buck was born in Farmville, Va., but lived and traveled to many places with particular affection for Africa and New England. He finally found his home in Richmond, where he received his Master's of Teaching from VCU in 1993. He spent 13 years teaching computer software skills at the Virginia Correctional Center for Women (VCCW) in Goochland, Va. He was loved by his students and coworkers for his cheerful disposition and creative teaching methods. There were always long wait lists for his classes. Buck was an avid outdoorsman who could be found in any weather with friends, hunting, fishing, boating and crossing the country on his motorcycles (preferably with a girl on the back). At one point, he was able to convince every one of his friends and his girl to buy a motorcycle. He enjoyed an enormous, eclectic and constantly growing collection of music, which he would listen to while tinkering in his tool shed. He was a mechanical genius. Buck loved reading, especially historical fiction and non-fiction. He also loved watching movies with his wife and three kitty cats. Buck was a wonderful storyteller with a knack for embellishment. Buck fully lived all of his life with grace and generosity. He will be remembered and cherished always by his wife, Ingrid Anne Mercer; parents, Carol Buckley and Thomas Charlton; siblings, Thomas Charlton Jr. (Jayne), Anne Charlton (Perry) and Carol Ehreth (Jeffrey); in-laws, Mary Ellen, Richard, Christopher and Yvette Mercer; as well as seven nieces and nephews. His life will also be celebrated by the scores of lifelong friends to whom he remained so loyal. If it is fair to measure a man by the qualities of his friends and family, then Buck stood very tall. Buck's family would like to thank the nurses and staff at St. Mary's Hospital for their professional and compassionate care. The memorial service will be held at the Church of the Holy Comforter on Saturday, January 23, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make contributions in Buck's name to the YMCA, Planting Seeds of Hope Annual Campaign or the Elizabeth Kates Foundation (directly aiding the VCCW) at 316 Oak Ln., Richmond, Va. 23226, 804-282-1391. Ride on, my love.

Dear Ingrid, I am deeply sorry for your loss. I never had a chance to meet Buck, but knowing who you are tells me who your husband was. I am sure that he was a great guy! I only saw one of your marriage pictures on a motorcycle and you both looked so happy, beautiful, and adventurous. I am sure that you miss him so much. God bless you!

Dearest Buck,
I was at your Memorial Service today. It was very hard for me, but, I was so grateful to your loved ones for telling such good stories about you. They did such a good job. Ingrid is beautiful. So glad I got to meet her for a second. I miss you so much. You were a best friend to me. No one can fill the space you left. I miss you awfully. It hurts. Delia

Dear Family of Bucks,
My sympathies and prayers for your loss. I best remember Buck for his assistance in improving my class computer network when I was a DCE newbee. I found his demeanor and style warm and so hip! If the angels aren't computer savy, Buck will fix that rest assured! He'll couple it with some great music..so they won't have to listen to harps all the time.

I walked into the video store the other day and saw "Blazing Saddles" and immediately thought of you. You loved that movie. Thoughts of you are everywhere.
Holding tight to the many years of adventures with Buck. You made all of our lives better.

Buckley, hope you're having a blast in that very special place. So many loved and cherished members of the family there with you. You'll bring that twinkle, those dimples, and the cutest nose which I remember when you were but a wee one.

A class act, with a big smile and a twinkle in his eye,
Seems like only yesterday, you were here and life was grand,
Now the rain is back in Seattle, and we stare out at the mountains and wonder why,
But we will remember, this town was your town, one of many, on the way to distant lands.

Buck was a colleague of mine when he worked at the Adult Career Development Center in Richmond. At that time, computers were making their entry into the classroom in a big way and most of us were frustrated with the new technology. Not Buck ~ he was a genius at sharing, teaching and putting “newbies” at ease with using computer technology. After spending many hours with Buck, absorbing as much of his knowledge as I could, I became such an admirer of his enthusiastic spirit, his dedication to his students and his caring collegiality. I was sorry to see him leave ACDC but I knew the staff and students at the correctional center would benefit greatly from his presence. There is no doubt that Buck made quite a contribution to our society!

Just a Friend

January 17, 2010

Life is but a stopping place,
A pause in what's to be,
A resting place along the road,
to sweet eternity.
We all have different journeys,
Different paths along the way,
We all were meant to learn some things,
but never meant to stay...
Our destination is a place,
Far greater than we know.
For some the journey's quicker,
For some the journey's slow.
And when the journey finally ends,
We'll claim a great reward,
And find an everlasting peace,
Together with the lord

May God be with you and your family.
