William Cottle Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 17, 2025.
William Henry Cottle Jr.

January 1, 1944 – January 24, 2025

William Henry Cottle Jr., affectionately known as Bill, passed away peacefully in Tucson, on January 24, 2025, surrounded by his loving children and grandchildren. He was 81 years old.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Eva Cottle, his wife, Janice, his brother-in-law and nephew, Ed and Mike Rife, and grandsons, Shane and Jesse.

Born and raised in Akron Ohio, he remained a devoted fan of Ohio State, the Cleveland Guardians, and even the Browns, although he struggled to watch them at times. After joining the Navy and marrying the love of his life, Janice, he left Akron and together they began their great life adventures, taking in the beauty all around them, never missing all the great sites to see and family and friends to visit. They enjoyed their time overseas and all the places they called home along the way, finally landing on the Big Island after retiring in 2008. Together, they formed lifelong friendships that they both cherished throughout their lives.

Bill was known and loved for his quiet, yet witty nature, he loved to make others laugh, always sharing jokes and silly stories. He eventually enjoyed joining in several productions at the local Aloha Theater and the friendships he made there. He rarely missed a Sunday drive to take in the scenery and drive fast! He loved spending his days golfing wherever and whenever he could but cherished those Friday games in Kona and savoring a malasada before or after!

Bill was a devoted brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his sister, Nancy Rife, his four children: Kelly Stroud, Kirsten (Rick) Kattinge, Andrew (Stacey) Cottle, and John (Lulie) Cottle. His legacy continues through his grandchildren-Drew, Kayla, Cassie, Shane, Amber, Courtney, Christopher, AJ, Ivy, Jesse, Jade, Merlin, Obi, Kayla, Theo, and Anderson, his 22 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense joy. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and all of his Island ohana-including Maile and Kona.

A celebration of Bill's life will be held on February 22nd, after an escort from the Patriot Guard to his home in Tucson, and at a later date in Kailua-Kona, where his ashes will be scattered in the waters he loved so much. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made in Bill's name to Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Ave, Montgomery AL, 36104.

He is loved and missed by so many!

You will miss him terribly, I'm sure. For those he left behind from the Class of '62 at Ellet, it was heartwarming to read the story of his life post-graduation. He will live on in memory. Thank you so much for the beautiful events of his life and family.

I remember first meeting Bill when I moved to North Ranch in Tucson he arrived at my front door with two small dogs under each arm - he thought they were mine who had gotten away . I thought he was bringing me a welcome present! He was the ultimate host when I visited him in Kona after Janice passed taking me to all the places she loved and even though it was painful he never wavered. He refused to take me for a kayak ride because I'm such a klutz and I will always be thankful for his good decision. we use to talk at least once a year he would always show up at my door when in town and send jokes via e mail once in awhile. I'll think of you often Bill you were such a great Guy [lease say hello to Janice I'm glad you are together again!

I will forever thank you for being like a father to me for so many years. I cherish the many memories I have of you throughout my lifetime, but the ones I hold the most dear are the memories we shared in Kona after we lost our rock, Aunt Janice. There were many adventures we took throughout the island, part of which was with the help of Hawaii Forest & Trail where I worked. My favorite was Flying to Oahu with you to finally visit Pearl Harbor. Actually, they are all my favorites because we got to do some amazing stuff such as taking a boat tour to see the amazing humpback whales, deep see fishing where we caught a big 60+ pound Ono, and of course swimming with manta rays along with Kelly.
It warms my heart that you and Aunt Janice are back together again. I love you both so much and will miss you Uncle Bill! Rest in Peace!

Bill was great to work with and fun to play golf with. I remember a time when we were playing golf and I pulled a fairway shot to the left and hit a brick wall. Bill laughed so hard and from then on, whenever I would see him at work, he would make the sound of the ball hitting the wall.

Bill was a great friend. We had many laughable times together. I remember one time when we were golfing, we were heading to a hole that was downhill from the last hole. Bill was driving the cart and he decided not to stay on the cart path and took a shortcut onto the fairway and I was not expecting this and was thrown from the cart and as I was trying to stop my falling, Bill was laughing so hard and told me that I looked like I was trying to do the moonwalk. I will always remember that Bill. RIP friend.

Bill was my brother who called me every Tuesday for the past 10 years. Always asked how I was doing, and he would tell he was doing ok. We would reminisce a little, then he would tell me a silly joke (always left me laughing) and then he would hang up. I miss sure do miss that Tuesday call! And miss my brother terribly.

Bill was a great friend. I remember one time he about killed me. We were golfing and we were heading to the next hole which was downhill from the previous hole. Bill was driving the golf cart and instead of staying on the path, he decides to take a shortcut cross the fairway which was downhill. Well I didn't expect him to do that and as he turned the cart off the path, I went sprawling out of the cart and tried to stop my rolling down the hill. He was laughing so hard that he said that I looked like I was trying to do the moonwalk. I will never forget that, Bill. RIP
