William Crawford Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 21, 2024.
William Robert "Bill" Crawford, aged 93, passed away on June 11, 2024, in Yreka, California, following complications from a stroke. Born on August 19, 1930, in Bradford, Pennsylvania, Bill was a cherished member of his community and a beacon of dedication and humor. He made Orland his home for almost 20 years, then moved to Chico where he lived for the past 45 years. Last September, he relocated to Yreka to be closer to his daughter and her family.

Bill's passion for education was evident through his 33 years of service at C.K. Price Middle School in Orland, CA, where he was a beloved figure among both staff and students. He held a Master's degree from Chico State University, which he utilized to inspire countless young minds in his role as a teacher.

A veteran of the Air Force, Bill served his country during the Korean War from October 1948 through August 1952, earning a Good Conduct medal. His commitment to service continued throughout his life, reflected in his personal interests and community involvement. He was a Life Member of the Chico Elks Lodge, and volunteered his time with the sheriff's department to educate students about the dangers of drugs and alcohol.

An avid outdoorsman, Bill enjoyed fishing in various settings-streams, lakes, rivers, and the ocean. His favorite spot to vacation was San Miguel de Allende, a city in Mexico where he took classes to learn Spanish. He also relished camping trips where he could relax and read his mystery novels. He was an enthusiastic sports fan, favoring football and basketball, and sometimes showed an interest in horse racing. His keen interest in antiques showcased his appreciation for history and storytelling.

Bill was predeceased by his father, Walter Crawford, his mother, Ina Crawford, and a great-grandson, Daniel. He leaves behind a loving family including his brother James Crawford of Chico; his children, William Crawford, Jr. of Chico and Debbie (Crawford) Pindell of Etna; five grandchildren-Seth (Callahan), Zachery (Kelseyville), and triplets Drew, Zoe, and Keely (Etna); and seven great-grandchildren-Jace, Ella, Severin, Garrett, Emma, Lana, and Liam.

Cremation has taken place, and a celebration of life will be held with family. Contributions in memory of Bill can be made to the Chico Elks Lodge, or to any Department of Veterans Affairs, honoring his service and commitment to fellow veterans.

The family has entrusted Girdner Funeral Chapel in Yreka, CA, with the arrangements. Bill's legacy of humor, dedication, and service will be dearly missed and forever cherished by all who knew him.

Dear Pindells and Bill Junior,
I am just now learning to hear about Bill. I am so sorry for your loss. He was a very nice, honest man and really did enjoy life. I tried to contact Bill for several month after he left Chico, but we never connected . I know many people here and at school will be sorry, too, to hear that he has passed.
Love to you,
Carol Campbell
