William Ferguson Obituary

"If the wind is right you can sail away, and find tranquility"
Songwriter: Christopher C. Cross

William "Bill" Ferguson, an optimist, sailor, golfer and Irish passport holder, passed away on June 3, 2024. He considered himself lucky in life.

Patient, thoughtful, and easy-going, Bill was happiest when in good company, and was often surrounded by his wonderful family and friends. The oldest of eight siblings, there was likely another Ferguson nearby. His warm heart, fun-loving nature, and large porch made him a beacon for a party. He had a particular talent for making others feel at ease.

Bill's journey began near the humble waters of Sargent's Pond in Leicester, MA, where he first discovered his love for sailing. He attended Saint John's High School, then commuted to The College of The Holy Cross by hitchhiking. He was a dedicated alum, serving as the president of the Holy Cross Club of Boston and playing in annual golf tournaments. In 1966, he graduated from SUNY Buffalo with an MBA. He brought his financial expertise to Peat Mawrick, Wang, Digital Equipment, and became the CFO of Information Mapping, gathering friends along the way.

His love of sailing grew over the years, as did the size of his boats and the expanse of his ponds. In wintertime, he often kept a large sailboat stored in his yard, a keen reminder of the spring to come. He was devoted to the craft and could navigate by the stars. In 2003 he captained his boat Sea Fever in the 645-mile Marion Bermuda Race, winning the coveted Cook's Prize (for the slowest boat in the category). He completed the race once more but then on his third try, he was forced to return due to bad weather. He needed no excuse to fly down to raise a glass in celebration of the attempt. True victory was found in the simple joy of being on the water - floating, reflecting on life, the stars, the weather, the birds flying overhead.

He was dedicated to Rita Pribnow Ferguson, his wife of 31 years who sadly passed away from Alzheimers. He referred to the end of her life as the "demencha advencha" - a nod to the positive and loving way he faithfully cared for her. He was lucky to spend his last ten years with Denise Duffee, creating a dream life with homes on Cape Cod and Florida, often joined by Denise's wonderful daughters Regan and Lauren and their families.

Bill lived life fully and thoughtfully. He loved skiing, traveling, and all kinds of adventures. His calendar was full of birthdays and anniversaries of his family and friends to remind him to call and hear their voices. A perfect day would end on land or sea sipping a cocktail while facing a gorgeous sunset and listening to the creatures of the night.

Besides Denise, he is also survived by his children Joy and Ian Ferguson, their spouses Alexander and Sherrie, as well as four beloved grandchildren - Case, Colsen, Liliana and Simone - and an abundance of family and friends. Puppy June Carter misses him terribly.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to his favorite charities - Amnesty International and The National Audubon Society.

Bill was my boss at Wang Labs before we became friends. I absolutely loved his perspectives on life. A sail from Newport RI to Cape Cod through a massive storm is one of my most vivid memories. He didn't scare easy, our Bill. Condolences to all who knew and loved him...

Bill and I were colleagues and great friends at Wang Laboratories back in 1979 and 1980 in Lowell. We reconnected a number of years ago and had stayed in touch frequently updating each other on family news and former work associates. He was an insightful, generous and caring man. Sincere condolences to Joy, Ian, all his family, and Denise.

I was late to my awareness of my friend and Holy Cross classmate Bill. I didn´t really know him at college. He was a day hop, and I resided on campus, so our paths up and down the steep hills and crevices of Mount St. James were different. Later on, I was delighted to get to know his "patient, thoughtful, and easy going" nature, and my wife Nancy and I enjoyed sharing some - not nearly enough - quality time with Bill and Denise in The Villages, Florida.

The obituary captured the essence of Bill as I perceived him. I love the epigraph by Christopher Cross from his poem "Sailing." It more than aptly introduces the obituary for Bill, a man who lived a full, productive life not laden by trappings and frills but infused by an existential spirit and a calm, measured pace. He was inquisitive. reflective, and tolerant - personal qualities rarely observed in our world. He seemed imperturbable and thus ruled the rocks. It was truly an enjoyable obituary for me to savor and a tribute to Bill´s serenity in life and now, as he rides the wind.

Farewell, Friend !

My condolences to Denise and the rest of Bill's family. I only got to know Bill well after we graduated from Holy Cross together. My late-developing friendship made me wish that we had connected sooner. He was a great guy and a delight to be around. In short, a good person.

Bill was a lifelong friend. We enjoyed the co-ownership of several sailboats providing many memorable moments sailing and racing in Buzzards Bay. When he acquired "Sea Fever" I was honored to crew for him in his first Marion to Bermuda race.
He would end our sailing with a quaff of wine, an endearing metaphor of his life.
RIP Bill

I was fortunate to be a class mate of Bill´s at St John´s and the Cross. He was a true Irish gentleman great to be around at a football game or party. God Bless
