William Giarla Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 6, 2007.
GIARLA WILLIAM
Of Mt. Lebanon, PA, formerly of Nahant, MA, entered into eternal rest June 4, 2007. His wife Joanne (Dixon) and his daughter Katie were by his side. He is finally at peace after a long battle with ALS (commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease). He was happily married for 23 years and had two beautiful children; Katherine (Katie) and Kenneth (Kenny). He was the son of Dorothy (Long) and Robert Giarla, both deceased. In addition to his wife and children he is survived by seven brothers and sisters who loved him dearly: Bob (Linda), Judie (Sid McQueen), David (Andrea), Dorothy (John Govoni), Richard (Julie), Jerry (Anne) and Betty Ann (Peter MacIsaac). Bill was more than a brother-in-law to Joanne's family, who came to love him as a brother: Ed Dixon, Paul (Gayle) Dixon, Kevin Dixon, Jan (Terry Smith), Monica (Drew Dentino), Mark (Sue) Dixon and Dennis Dixon. They were by his side throughout his illness. He is also survived by 36 nieces and nephews who loved and revered their uncle with all of their hearts and souls. Bill was the president of the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Harvard, Yale, Princeton Club having received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University in 1975. He then earned his Juris Doctorate from Duke University. He worked as an associate in Pittsburgh for Buchanan Ingersoll in the litigation section in the early 1980's and later practiced briefly with Westinghouse Corporation before moving on to Koppers Industries (later acquired by Beazer and then Hanson). It was in these latter years he developed a reputation for his mastery of reinsurance and reclamation aspects of environmental law and maintained a working association and affiliation with the firm of Babst, Calland, Clements, & Zomnir. In November of 1994, his sister-in-law, Martha Dixon, was tragically killed in a shootout in the Washington D.C. police headquarters. Bill became the president of the Martha Fund, dedicated to building children's playgrounds in her memory. The first ten years the fund made many contributions to playgrounds in the Pittsburgh area. In 2007 his dream of a signature playground was realized when Martha's Playground, a children's wonderland, opened in Mt. Lebanon Park. Bill was considered the driving force behind its approval, development and construction. Although a New England native, Bill became an avid Pittsburgh sports fan, sharing Steeler and Pirate season tickets and often frequenting Pitt basketball games. An accomplished athlete himself, Bill was inducted into the Lynn Classical High School Sports Hall of Fame in Lynn, Massachusetts. He was quarterback and captain of his football team and captain of his basketball team. He was a member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society, offering assistance to the needy of his parish community. With great enthusiasm Bill coached his daughter and her friends in youth soccer and basketball for 5 years and then became their greatest fan. Viewing will be Wednesday 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, and Thursday 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at LAUGHLIN MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 222 Washington Road, Pittsburgh, PA. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Martha Fund, 933 Rockwood Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15234. Mass of Christian burial will be held Friday at 10:30 AM at St. Anne Roman Catholic Church, 400 Hoodridge Dr., Mt. Lebanon, PA.

To the Giarla Family: I am a friend of Bill's from his days at Duke Law School. We did not keep up in later years but I am very sorry to learn of his passing. I will always remember him as I knew him in the late 1970's, when he was always the best athlete on the field (or court), and always had a tremendous sense of humor. Bill was universally respected by our classmates as a leader.

Jo, Katie & Kenny,
I just heard of Bill's passing and I just wanted to let you all know how truly sorry I am for your loss. He is such a wonderful man, and this world will miss him dearly. He was one of a kind, who lived a great life while he could and loved you all so much. Katie, he has so much to be proud of in you and I know you will continue to shine in his honor. And Kenny, I know that one day when you are older you will be a wonderful reminder of a very honorable man. Jo, I cannot begin to imagine your pain, but I know how strong you are. I know that you have many wonderful memories of a husband you loved so dearly. I guess the only comforting idea is that his battle with this terrible disease is now over and he is in a better place resting and watching over all of you. He will be missed. If there is anything that I can do, please let me know.

Joanne, Katie, & Kenny: It seems our paths have criss-crossed in a variety of ways, always leaving me to reflect how "I wish I knew the Giarla's better - they are so nice" whether it was PTA work, David Friends, or football at the Grayhack's house...I cannot even begin to imagine the depth of your loss...I can offer my prayers...Mary Lou & the Wotring family

Joanne,
I knew 'Billy' as a young man, so I cannot claim to know your 'Bill' as the man that he became. But so many years ago I knew him to be an intelligent, honorable, loyal, and affectionate guy who also found great (and sometimes irreverent) humor in this journey that we call life. He loved Nahant, he loved his big Nahant family, and it sounds as though the Dixons loved him in the same way that all of his North Shore siblings loved him. I am blessed that he was, for a short time, a part of my young life. And you are all blessed to have shared so many years of life with him.

Dear Joanne, Katie & Kenny,

We are told that God only thrusts upon us what He knows we can endure. Yet, when we find ourselves faced with what seems like insurmountable challenges, tremendous pain or overwhelming fear, our faith in that ideal is tested. Leaving us to wonder--where will we find the strength and the courage to greet each day, each hour or each moment when our hearts are heavy and our arms are weary? how will we be able to extract the joy from the pain? how will we carry on amid the uncertainty without feeling hopeless and weakened? and, how will we live in a world that keeps on turning when our world is stopping? The 4 of you---Bill, Joanne, Katie & Kenny--- have answered these questions. And, you’ve done so with grace, dignity and eloquence. It confirms that God does give us what we need to carry on---He gives us our family---those who we most dearly love. You have defined marriage and family in their most revered and sacred forms. May you all take comfort in the many joyous moments you have shared and in the great love that you received and bestowed on one another. And, even on your darkest days, may you remember that Bill did not leave you, he remains. He did not go to a distant place. He simply began his eternity.

Bill was a tremendous human being. What the world has lost, heaven has been rewarded with. We will always remember Bill's smiling face, hearty laugh and his comforting voice. But, most especially.....we will always recall how much he loved and adored Joanne, Katie and Kenny. It was always clear...no matter where or when....that Bill's soul was filled with great joy when he was with them or when he spoke of them. What a treasure....

With sympathy....
God Bless you all,
Judi, Carmen, Toni & Vince Mancuso

Memories of Bill and the times we worked and played together will remain with me. I am sorry that he is gone. My sympathy to Bill's family. No doubt that life is a journey, not reaching some high or low point along the jouney. This, I am sure, is not a high point. However, Bill's memories are good ones.
