William Hammett Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 27, 2024.

William Mitchell Howard Hammett, known to his family and friends as Bill, departed this life on August 7, 2024, at the age of 80. His final moments were spent in tranquility, seated beneath a tree by the gentle waters of Passamaquoddy Bay, with a view of Campobello Island, Eastport, Maine. Born on June 21, 1944, in the historic city of Old Town, he has returned to the land that bore him.

Bill's academic journey began at Southern Illinois University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. His pursuit of knowledge continued at the University of Chicago, where he was awarded a Master's degree. His expertise in economics led him to esteemed positions, such as President and Trustee of the Manhattan Institute, New York, where he exerted a lasting influence on economic scholarship, and public policy.

He served his nation with honor in the Army, from 1968 to 1970.

Bill was a man of many pursuits, finding joy in fishing, sailing, canoeing and kayaking. His adventures on the waters of the West Coast and streams of Maine were among his most cherished pastimes. An ardent traveler, he relished in the discovery of new cultures and annals of history, an interest that dovetailed with his love of literature. His residence was adorned with antiques, each with its own tale that he delighted in recounting.

Bill leaves behind his daughter, Kelly Morin (Dudley) Palmer of West End, North Carolina; his granddaughter, Caroline Morin Palmer of Washington DC, and cherished cousins from coast to coast. He joins in peace, his grandfather, Dr. Walter MH Hammett of Baltimore, Maryland; his father, retired Major Walter HM Hammett, and his mother Lillian J Hammett, née Morin, of Delray Beach, Florida.

In remembrance, Bill is celebrated for his intellectual rigor, his challenging discourse, and his resilient spirit, which served as an inspiration to all who knew him. His memory will be treasured and his legacy enduring.

I met Bill in 1985 when I was fresh off Reagan´s re-election campaign. He took a chance and hired me to work at the Manhattan Institute. I am indebted to him for expanding my thinking, introducing me to new ideas, thought-provoking books, and for truly believing in me. Bill could identify original thinkers and give them a platform that put the Institute at the forefront of shaping public policy. And while Bill was an avid fisherman and loved the wilds of British Columbia, he was also a terrific equestrian. I can recount many a harrowing ride with Bill in New York´s Central Park and in the English country sides. A voracious reader, who loved Shakespeare´s Henry IV parts 1 and 2, he was known to read at least 5 newspapers a day. He had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and there wasn´t anything he wasn´t interesting in learning or discussing. He treasured a map of his beloved Moosehead Lake in Maine, and it is fitting he returned to Maine at the end of his remarkable life. I am deeply grateful for my time with him.

I first met Bill Hammett in the mid 80´s when we joined the same summer house with twelve others in West Hampton, New York and then hung out together for several years in Manhattan.

After leaving NYC for far-flung destinations, we unexpectedly met again in the late 90´s when we ran into each other one day on the Stanford campus and began exploring the San Francisco Bay Area together. Among other memorable escapades, Bill gave me a gratuitous driving lesson late one night on a winding mountain road in the Milpitas foothills after a Mexican dinner (with several Margaritas) in Santa Cruz. He told me precisely when to give more gas, to brake and to cut-in on each turn. It was years later when he confided that he didn´t know anything about sports driving and that he "thought we both were going to die that night".

I most recently saw Bill two years ago when he spent the day showing my wife and me "everything important there is to see" in his adopted city of Seattle - which included expansive views from strategic hillsides, a tour of the harbor area and a detailed exploration of the Ballard Locks complete with close-up views of salmon jumping their way upstream.

Since then we were in regular contact by text and email until two days before his death. During that time he shared his latest thoughts on the state of international competition in information technology (still a policy wonk) and on the all-time best scientists, politicians, authors, plays, as well as day trips outside Paris (he was an admitted list maker). I shared my thoughts on composers, upon which he immediately bought Tommasini´s book to learn more.

A few words describing Bill - intelligent, serious, independent, opinionated, deep, convivial, poetic, adventurous and, most relevant to our relationship, hilarious - a master of subtle humor and irony (see Milpedis Foothills, above). I could say more, but I think this mostly covers it, and he probably wouldn´t have wanted me to ... although he did seem to enjoy the appreciation he received from the author Tom Wolfe.

Bill was a delight to know. I´ll miss his presence.

My wife and I met Bill at an inn he was staying at in mid July of this year. We sat on the porch and visited with him for hours over the two nights we stayed there. He shared much on his life as we did ours. We are just now having an understanding of what a truly remarkable man that he was. However he didn´t elaborate on the accelerated health issues he was experiencing, nor on the accolades of his professional career. He was as genuine, humble and down to earth decent as anyone we´ve had the privilege of meeting. When we parted ways, we planned on coming back over Labor Day weekend and he told us he´d be there. Obviously, when we returned we were met with the saddening news of Bill´s passing and after a short time we started seeing a picture of who this man was. Truly a remarkable man that we feel beyond privileged to have met. Thank you for the time you shared with us, rest in peace Bill.

I had the pleasure of fly fishing with Bill on the Penobscot river in the summer of 2004. He happened to be visiting Maine that summer so I jumped at the chance to spend the day with my cousin. The water levels were very high so conditions were not in our favor for good fishing. That didn't matter to us, we enjoyed our selves and were content with our time together, and we did catch a few fish!

My first solid memory of Bill was him giving me some firecrackers when I was a kid at Pushaw Lake. He made me promise to be careful. And I was... mostly :)

The next few hours were spent in mayhem and glee. To this day when I think of him I can't help but remember that insanely fun afternoon.
