He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, the former Dr. Madeline Phillips Heidelberg; father of Jeff V. Hare (Cindy) of Salisbury, MD, and stepchildren, Billy Heidelberg of Slidell; Ruth H. Starr (Mike) of Slidell; Dr. Stephanie Heidelberg of Charlottesville, VA; Madalyn H. Smith (late Kenneth) of Ringgold, GA; Martha H. Lewis (Pete) of Slidell; Stephen Heidelberg of Slidell; and sister-in-law, Miriam Hare of Evansville, IN. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was the son of the late Dr. John H. Hare and Imogen Varner Hare, and brother of the late Dr. Daniel Hare.
Dr. Hare was born Dec. 12, 1919, in Evansville, IN, a city named for his ancestor Robert Evans. He graduated from Bosse High School and received his Bachelor's Degree from Indiana University in 1941 where he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and ROTC during WWII. He graduated from the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1944 and completed his residency in pathology at the University of Tennessee Medical School in 1948. During that time he conducted research projects at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD and Sloan-Kettering Memorial Hospital in New York City. He settled in Oxford, MS as Chair of the University of Mississippi School of Medicine Pathology Department, eventually moving to Jackson, MS with the medical school in 1953. While in Jackson, he served on the medical staff of Baptist Hospital. Dr. Hare's extensive cancer research and numerous published articles, along with his diagnostic skills and intellect earned him great respect from his peers. He retired in 1979 and moved to Mandeville, LA where he married Dr. Heidelberg. After returning to Tennessee and living for 16 years, the Hares moved back to Lacombe, LA and lived until his death.
His hobbies included fishing, stamp and coin collecting, working crossword puzzles and reading the daily Wall Street Journal. His clever wit and sense of humor will be sorely missed.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 30, 2008. Visitation will be at 10:00am at Alexander East Chapel, 2115 Lincoln Ave, Evansville, Indiana. Graveside services will be held at 11:00am, at Oak Hill Cemetery in Evansville, Indiana.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Angel Program, 360 Robert Blvd., Slidell, LA 70458, or to a charity of choice.

I was saddened to learn of Bill Hare's death. I first met him in 1959 when I was a pathology resident at UMC. He later recruited me to join the group at Baptist in Jackson. I regarded him as a mentor and a good friend, and I know he will be greatly missed.

I have wonderful memories of Bill, Jeff and family. Think pathologists were taught how to wind long tales, tell jokes and relate war stories....as they did them all so well. Carl has been dead 16 years and the memories of our gatherings with friends are indelible. May God bless you and strenghten you during the endless days and sleepless nights.

Bill was a wonderful stepfather and grandfather, and he'll be greatly missed. I'm sure, however, we'll keep him alive in our hearts with funny stories, fond memories.... Which of us can ever hear, for example, the words "under the spreading chestnut tree..." without thinking of him? And smiling!

Grandpa Hare was one of the most interesting people I have ever known; I am sure I am not alone in that assessment. In fact, on several occasions, friends of mine went down to Slidell/Lacombe with Dom and I on our way to N.O., and we would stay with Grandma and Grandpa for a night or two. My friends would always be impressed (and tell all of our other friends in Atlanta how cool my Grandpa was) with his knowledge and his stories from working in oncology/pathology. Two of my friends even said they wanted to adopt him as their grandfather! I personally will always remember eating cherry ice cream with him when he and Grandma were still living in Chattanooga and being grossed out by his "bachelor snacks" especially the sardines. And of course the stamp collection Grandpa helped me start when I was in middle school is something that I will always have. He will be deeply missed.

Just want to express my condolensces to Jeff and the rest of the family. Thanks to Dr. Hare, I have fabulous memories of growing up with another pathologist's child—summers swimming at River Hills, fishing during parties at Dr. Brunson's lakehouse, Casey Elementary, etc. Jeff, even though distance has seperated us I'll always think of you fondly. It hurts to lose a father, especially as great as yours and mine. May time and the love of friends who care help lessen your heartache. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Keep in touch.

Dr. Hare was one of the finest men I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I worked with/for him in the early '60s at UMC and other great pathologist - Dr. Joel Brunson, Dr. Carl Evers, Dr. Katie Goetz, Dr. Roger Arhelger and all of the brilliant young medical students they taught and nurtured. He was a true inspiration to anyone who ever had the pleasure of knowing him on any level. God blessed all of his family and friends with his presence.
