George Kaviar

George Kaviar, son of immigrants, joined the army at age 17 and fought in Europe during WW2. He was a radio operator in a half-track and fought in many major battles near the end of the war. He helped liberate and document Buchenwald concentration camp. He spent his professional career as an educator, first as a history teacher at Andrew Jackson HS in New York City and later became headmaster of Jackson Academy, a school within a school, assisting many troubled youths get an education. Together with his wife Iris he raised 4 boys in Levittown, NY.

George is preceded in death by his wife Iris and his eldest son Glen. He moved to Louisville's Treyton Oak Towers 5 years ago and greatly enjoyed the camaraderie of the residents and kindness of the staff. He passed peacefully on the morning of October 5, 2019, at Baptist Hospital East palliative care unit at the age of 93. George is survived by his sons: Eric, Craig, and Brent Kaviar; 7 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.

George Kaviar's life will be celebrated with a Memorial at The Temple (5101 Hwy 42, Louisville 40241), in the Klein Center on Sunday October 27,2019 with family and friends at 10 am.

As I wrote in my message on the other page, Shakespeare's words are a perfect fit for George: "he acted from honesty and for the general good. His life was gentle, and the elements mixed so well in him that Nature might stand up and say to all the world, 'This was a man.'"
