William Hartman, Jr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 26, 2025.
William "Bill" Frederick Hartman, Jr., age 80, passed away on June 8, 2025, in St. Paul, Minnesota.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou (née Morgan), and their three daughters-Maureen, Megan, and Madelaine-along with three grandchildren, Jackson and Liam Nguyen and Juniper Strickland, and two sons-in-law, Yen Nguyen and Georgie Strickland. Bill loved his family deeply and was immensely proud of each of them.

Bill is also survived by his sister, Gerry (née Hartman) Moser; brother-in-law, Dick Moser; and niece and nephew, Nora Moser McMillan and Rich Moser. He was predeceased by his parents, William Frederick Sr. and Regina (née Kelleher), whose loss he felt profoundly throughout his life.

Born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, Bill was a proud graduate of the University of Notre Dame, where he earned a B.S. in 1966, an M.S. in 1968, and a Ph.D. in 1975. Inspired by the early days of space exploration, Bill became a "computer guy" back when computers filled entire rooms. He was well known in the national IBM MVS operating system user group, SHARE, as a top-notch troubleshooter for IBM large-scale computer systems, eventually joining the IBM Corporation in that capacity.

Bill's career in technology and computer science took him and his family from South Bend, Indiana, to Lexington, Massachusetts; Southlake, Texas; and Winston-Salem, North Carolina, before retiring to Minnesota to be closer to family.

Bill will be deeply missed by his family and friends. A memorial service is being planned for later this year. Condolences can be sent in care of Hartman family, 949 Sibley Memorial Parkway, #422, Lilydale, MN 55118. In lieu of flowers, Bill's family asks that you donate to a cause close to your heart in his honor.

I remember Bill from our days at Central Catholic HS. He was a funny, intelligent and good-natured person. Sorry to hear of his passing. My condolences to his family.
