WILLIAM HEFFERNAN Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix from Feb. 22 to Feb. 25, 2012.
WILLIAM JOHN HEFFERNAN 1924 2012 The family of William John Heffernan are sadden to announce his passing in his 87th year at Luther Special Care Home at 1212 Osler Street, Saskatoon. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; and five children, Mona Potter (Ross, Jamie, Crystal), Patrick (Kimberley, Caitlin), Kevin (Alice, Sean, Leanne), Daniel (Randi, Porter, Erin, Kaylee), and James; his sisters Doreen McGunigal of Portland, Oregon and Margaret Shillington of Prince Albert; and brothers Daniel Heffernan of Calgary and Bruce Heffernan of Prince Albert. He was predeceased by his brother Jack Heffernan of Outlook. He was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan to John and Beryl Heffernan and lived on the family farm until age 18, when he signed up for military service in the air force, serving from 1942 to 1945. Following his discharge he attended C.V.T. school to complete his grades 11 and 12, after which he enrolled at the U of S in Teachers College, where he obtained his Standardized Teaching Certificate. He married Margaret Morrell and together they began teaching careers in the Rosetown and Nipawin areas. He continued studies at summer schools and St. Andrew's College obtaining his B.A. and B. Ed. degrees. He ended his teaching years in Saskatoon where he served in a number of public schools and also spent two years on a curriculum development committee. His studies at St. Andrew's College led to him serving as a student minister for four years in the Herschel community. Thereafter he was involved with young people as a leader of youth groups and Sunday schools and substitute lay supply. In his retirement he coached university students who were having difficulty with writing essays, working one on one. His love of books led him, finally, to quiet years to reading as his physical health deteriorated. He was most often found in his recliner with a couple of books and a cup of tea. His last three years were spent in Porteous Lodge and then Lutheran Special Care Home. The Memorial Service will be held at Saskatoon Funeral Home at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, February 29th 2012 with Rev. A.M. Nicklin officiating following which the family and Rev. Nicklin will place the Urn at the Columbarium at St. John's Cathedral prior to joining guests for a reception at the Edwards Family Centre. Flowers are gratefully declined. Those so wishing may make a memorial donation to the Luther Care Foundation (1212 Osler St. Saskatoon S7N 0T9). Condolences may be sent to [email protected]. Arrangements have been entrusted to Saskatoon Funeral Home.
