William Herpel Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 11, 2023.
William Christopher "Chris" Herpel, 70, of Columbia, Mississippi, passed away on November 5, 2023. Born on March 19, 1953, in Thibodaux, Louisiana, he was known to his loved ones as Chris.

Chris was an avid outdoorsman who had a deep passion for hunting and fishing. He cherished spending time in nature and enjoyed the company of his friends on fishing and hunting trips across Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana. In addition to his love for the outdoors, Chris believed in giving back to his community. He volunteered with the local food pantry and was always ready to assist his church whenever needed. His dedication and presence will be sorely missed by many.

Chris is survived by his beloved sons Christopher Charles Herpel (Rachel) and William Kelly Herpel (Lucy). He is also survived by his sister Peggy Baumann, brother Cameron Herpel (Sue), numerous nephews, nieces, and his precious grandson, Jace Walker Herpel. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Peggy Herpel, as well as his grandparents.

After graduating from Thibodaux High School, Chris attended Louisiana State University before ultimately graduating from Nicholls State University. He was a proud member of the 1972 pledge class of the Kappa Sigma fraternity and maintained a lifelong friendship with many of his brothers. He then embarked on a successful career in the petroleum industry in Texas.

Chris found solace and spirituality in his faith. He worshipped at St. John's Episcopal Church in Thibodaux, Louisiana, and later at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Columbia, Mississippi.

A memorial service will be held in honor of Chris at St. John's Episcopal Church, located at 718 Jackson Street, Thibodaux, LA 70301, on Friday, November 17, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. Following the service, a reception will be held in the Parish Hall.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the St. John's Episcopal Church Endowment Fund, the St. Stephen's Episcopal Church Memorial Fund located at 1300 Church Street, Columbia, MS 39429, or the Asbury Hospice Home located at 304 S. 40th Hattiesburg, MS 39402.

Chris Herpel will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, his dedication to his community, and his unwavering faith. He leaves behind a lasting legacy that will be cherished by all who knew him.
