William HUNTER Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 3, 2021.
The Hunter family is sad to announce the death of Bill Hunter who passed away this past Tuesday, comfortably in his home, with his wife of 65 years Anne (née Allen) at his side. The eldest son of Marion Hunter (née Crawford, 1889-1981) and Thomas N. Hunter (1896-1962), Bill was raised on Rosslyn Avenue North, attended Memorial School and then Hamilton Technical Institute. While the family resided briefly in Buckingham, Quebec, and Fort Wayne, Indiana, Bill was a true Hamiltonian at heart. A tool & die maker by trade, he worked well into his 70s, much of his career at WABCO (Westinghouse Air Brake Co.) as head of quality control. A loving husband, father, grandfather and friend of many, he was always active in mind and body. A hockey player in his younger days, he loved sailing, curling, skiing, carving, making furniture, doing the daily crossword, art, music and books, the Hamilton Public Library and Farmer's Market. Bill always encouraged others to believe in themselves and supported them in pursuing their ambitions. He loved a collaborative project, taught empathy and generosity, and was a great mentor and life-long learner. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered. Bill was predeceased by his siblings Marion, Robert and Thomas, his much-loved grandson Nicholas, and his close friends George, Frank and Tom. He is survived by Anne and their four children Marilyn, Douglas, Susan and Andrew; grandchildren Grace, Crawford, Drew, Will, Iain, Max and Claire; daughters-in-law Debbie and Lisa and son-in law Steve; in-laws Betty, Mel, Barbara and Robert; and his nieces and nephews Willard, Christine, Sandra, John and Nancy. "I had a good run."- Bill Anne Hunter and family would like to express their deep gratitude to VON team Meaghen, Carley, Victor, Tim and their colleagues for their exceptional care. Donations can be made in his memory to the Hamilton Centre for Civic Inclusion: A community-based organization mobilizing all Hamiltonians to create an inclusive and welcoming city. One of my favourite memories of Uncle Bill: when I was an arrogant teenager I once tried to show off for him by playing something loudly and badly on the piano. When I was done butchering Brubeck he walked over, put his hand on my shoulder, and said "That was alright." More of a condolence than a congratulation, and well deserved. The look on his face was pained, and priceless. He taught me to love a good mystery, to listen carefully, and to never try and one-up him. Never saw him often enough, never knew him well enough. But I miss him, and I miss you all.

Aunt Anne, Lynn, Doug, Sue, Andy and Family - we are heartbroken over the loss of Uncle Bill. He was the epitome of a true gentleman with a huge heart. He told the most amazing stories and in turn, would listen with a kind ear and genuine interest when you had a story to tell. He was an invaluable support for me when dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and later when we were losing him to cancer. Uncle Bill was not only concerned about his little brother but about how we were dealing with it as well.
Uncle Bill had a strong shoulder for support, an open heart, a kind ear and a great voice of reason, compassion and advice whenever I needed him.
Some of my best memories are of our families camping on Manitoulin Island (Uncle Bill's shoes, which were still on his feet, smoking and the soles almost melting because they were too close to the fire), camping on the East Coast (clam digging and eating giant lobsters), Christmas dinner's, and our own greeting to each other - "My God, Father" and "My God, Daughter".
I've posted my favorite photo of him - manning the BBQ in the backyard of our house on Lawnmere Cresc. Dad wouldn't BBQ because it was raining. Uncle Bill took control, got his raingear out of the car, asked mom for the meat and made us dinner. The rain had just stopped and he had the best grin on his face as if he were having a great old time!
I've also posted the last picture that we have of the four siblings together - Uncle Bill, Aunt Marion, Uncle Craig (Tom) and dad.
Our love, thoughts and prayers go out to all of you.
Sandra, Betty and Tim
