William Imhoff Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 23, 2012.
RED LION William Coleman Imhoff died on January 18, 2012, in the Select Specialty Hospital at York Hospital following a brief illness. The son of the late Howard Coleman and Mary Mildred (Herron) Imhoff, he was born in Pittsburgh, on November 14, 1928. Following graduation from William Penn Senior High School in 1946, he enlisted in the Army and was assigned as a radio operator to the 1st Squadron of the 8th Cavalry stationed at Omiya, Japan. After graduating from Gettysburg College in 1952, he worked for Yorkraft, Inc., the family owned business founded by his father, Howard, and brother-in-law, G. William Schaumann. He later served as President of the company. He was married for 59 years to Nancy (Mortorff) Imhoff and together they raised four sons, John of San Francisco, Calif., David (Jennifer) of New Bridgeville, Daniel (Quincey) of Healdsburg, Calif., and Will (Sharon) of Portsmouth, N.H. Bill lovingly referred to his beautiful granddaughters, Johanna and Willa, as the "Book Ends" because they are the oldest and the youngest respectively of his eight grandchildren. He was also very proud of handsome grandsons, Coleman, Brandt, David Jr., Max, Joe, and Gardner. Bill was an avid reader and especially enjoyed a good mystery. He was an accomplished cook, enthusiastic about skiing, scuba diving, walking the Rail Trail with Nancy and the family dog, backyard bird watching, and touring the Indian ruins of the Southwest. The years he spent on the York Suburban School Board he found rewarding, and he later served as its President taking a genuine interest in the students. He also served as a volunteer at Our Daily Bread. Bill was preceded in death by a sister, Margot Schaumann, and a brother, Howard C. Imhoff, Jr. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Kaltreider-Benfer Library, 147 S. Charles St., Red Lion, PA 17356. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2012, at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of York at 925 S. George St., York, with a visitation at 10 a.m. and the service at 11 a.m. The Etzweiler Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1111 E. Market St., York, is in charge of arrangements. www.etzweiler.com
