William JAGER Obituary

Published by Calgary Herald from May 30 to May 31, 2014.
JAGER, William (Bill)
William (Bill) Jager passed away peacefully Sunday, May 25, 2014 at the age of 94. Bill will be remembered always by his cherished wife of 37 years, Donna, along with his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his sister Julie of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and his brother Johnny of Edmonton, Alberta and predeceased by his brother Tony of Richmond, Saskatchewan, his brother Eddy of Calgary, Alberta, his sister Emily of Calgary, his sister Pauline of Medicine Hat, his sister RoseMarie of Medicine Hat and his sister Tillie of Grande Prairie. Bill was born in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan in 1920, the fifth of nine children. He faced hardships at an early age, none better epitomized than living in a house with mud plastered to the walls to keep out the bitter Saskatchewan cold. He then moved to Lethbridge where he was a jack of all trades until deciding upon becoming a house builder and moving to the vibrancy that the early oil boom days brought to Calgary. His first basement was dug with a pick and shovel and the luxury of a horse to move the dirt. It was from this humble start that a great success story was to be born. Jager Homes and later Jager Industries became recognized as one of the most trusted names in land development, home building and the building materials industry over six decades. One of the unique features that an early life of hardship brings is an indomitable spirit to realize certain dreams and aspirations no matter what the circumstances. In this regard Bill, who had no formal training but a great and active intuitive mind, was not going to let challenges stand in his path. In the 1950's-1960's when the City of Calgary controlled the sale of residential lots, Bill joined with some like-minded individuals, including V. Keith and others, to form Calgary's first private land development company which would change the way land was developed in the city. It was this pioneering drive, which in later years took Bill into the building products business as a complement to the home building and land development business. When his truss plate supplier refused to sell to him, he took matters into his own hands and developed his own truss plate, which would become the largest truss plate business in Canada and one of the largest in North America. The same drive took him into the I-joist business with similar results. Bill was always very proud of his land banking insights and at one time had one of the largest land positions in desirable areas throughout the City of Calgary. When time permitted, Bill had a love of golf, which would continue until his eyesight was too poor to play. Even then he would still try to play with trusted partners who would tell him where his ball had landed and assist him with his next shot. Bill married Donna in 1979 and together they worked tirelessly as a team for over 37 years further building the businesses. After six decades of growth, Bill and Donna decided to sell the businesses and enjoy some well-earned time to themselves. Bill always enjoyed his summers in Kelowna, often sitting at the end of his beloved dock just admiring the lake. When winters became too harsh, Arizona beckoned where he and Donna enjoyed their extended family. Calgary always remained home however, and the original homestead in DeWinton was a place of contentment for Bill and Donna throughout the years. In particular, Bill loved his dogs Rudy, Amy and Mr. Higley. They often had a seat at any meeting just as important as any business colleague. Bill had a life fully lived with many colorful chapters throughout his years. He was a businessman who succeeded without any formal training but with a great sense of reason and foresight. In many respects he was larger than life with a personality that could be boisterous at times and thought provoking at others. Funeral Services will take place at Eden Brook Funeral Home (corner of 17 Avenue S.W. and Lower Springbank Road, Calgary) on Monday, June 2, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. followed by burial thereafter at the grounds. A reception will follow at the Calgary Golf and Country Club at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Foundation for Fighting Blindness (www.ffb.ca). Condolences may be forwarded to the family by visiting www.edenbrookcemetery.ca. Arrangements entrusted to EDEN BROOK FUNERAL HOME, 24223 Township Road 242, Calgary, AB T3Z 3K2.

Dear Donna,
I am just learning of the passing of Bill and am heartbroken. I have so many fond memories of the both of you when I lived in Arizona that I will never forget.
You both made me a stronger person inside to handle the many challenges in life and I thank you for that. Bill always could make me laugh no matter what. May he RIP now.

To Ms. Donna Jager and family.

I am so very sorry for your loss. Mr. Jager was a very dedicated business man and I enjoyed very much working for both him and Mrs. Jager. He will be missed by all that knew him and he will be missed by the housing community in Calgary for which he set the gold standard.

May he rest in peace.

In my eyes, Great Grandpa was a great and successful at everything he said and did! He was like a superhero to me- He could do anything!

When I started my business 3 years ago it's Great Grandpa that I looked up to and hope to one day be as successful as he is!
I will forever cherish the memories I have of him! I will always look up to him and even though he lived a long and wonderful life, I wish we had more time together!

I'd also like to send my love and condolences to Donna and her family!

Much Love!

Uncle Bill, I will always remember you as a straight shooter. Ask a question and WOW.... look out....super straight answer and more! I will always remember our wonderful times when you and Donna came to visit in Mississauga when Laura was born (now 33). The lovely bible that you and Donna gave Melissa (now 28) for her First Holy Communion. Our times in Hawaii deep sea fishing; our times in Florida; at the infield during the Calgary Stampede and when we were invited to sit at your table when you were honoured as a candidate for "Entrepreneur of the Year" and the 60th Anniversary of Jager Industries. These are all treasured memories that Tom and I and the girls shared with you and Donna. We will miss you. Rest in peace my Dear Uncle.
Donna you are always in our hearts. I know my father and mother, John and Marion Jager also send their their love. Connie and Tom Deadman xoxoxo

I will always remember uncle bill as a strong, determined, and hard working inspiration. He worked for his dreams, when he achieved his dreams he worked to make the dream bigger. I remember him asking me at the age of 18 after graduating "What do you want to do with your life", I replied "I'm going to university and I'm going to have my own business". He didn't ask me what kind of a business, or what I'm interested in, he just looked me straight in the eyes and said, "Dreams can come true if you work at them, you can't sit around and wait for that business to come to you."

Bill Jager will always be an inspiration to his family and friends, he touched a lot of lives, and will always be remembered for that. I am still working for that dream and will NEVER give up, you have proven a shovel and pick can achieve great outcomes.
Rest in peace Uncle Bill, words cannot express how much of an inspiration you were and will always be.

Bill was a great man, not afraid to work hard but who loved to tease and joke. I have many memories but my favorited is of him driving his combine down Macleod trail to his office at 84th and calling our mutual friend,Sandy MacKay, to bring home a cold beer. Our condolences go to Donna and his family. He will be missed but will be remembered fondly by many

A legend in the homebuilding industry. I remember him telling me about hiring a singer from Toronto in the early days to stand on the roof of his office on Macleod Trail to woo customers. He was a shrewd businessman.

Bill was quite a guy. I worked for him for 12 years and he always used to ask me if I was working hard. I had the utmost respect for him and what he accomplished in his life. RIP Bill.

When my family and I moved to Calgary in 1996, Bill and Donna Jager became much more than my employer...they became my family. I'll love them always.
