William Mallard Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 22, 2013.
William Paul Mallard
1943 –2013

Billy Mallard's life was defined by relationships: if you knew him, you loved him. Nobody was funnier, and the stories and memories of Billy's larger-than-life personality and clever wit will live on. William Paul Mallard (Billy), 69, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013 at Emory University Hospital Midtown after battling head and neck cancer for less than a year.
Billy was born in Charlotte, N.C. to the late Ernest Lynwood (Baggy) Mallard, Jr. and Martha Matheson Mallard on Dec. 5, 1943. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Cindy Bickerstaff Mallard, and their two sons: William Paul Mallard, Jr. and Charles Thornton Mallard and his wife Samantha Vester Mallard who were married in Billy's hospice room the day before he died. He is also survived by his sister Marilyn Kehoe (Jack) of Athens, Ga., brother Lynwood Mallard (Lulie) of Charlotte and sister Ann Fielding (Craig) of Cramerton, N.C.; and by his mother-in-law Gayle Kennedy as well as sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Marcie and Dan Brown of Atlanta and Chip and Jayne Bickerstaff of Jacksonville, Fla. and numerous adoring nieces and nephews.
Billy's three-sport legacy at Myers Park High in Charlotte was predictable as his father was a three-sport inductee into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. Billy attended The Citadel on a football scholarship, but his football career ended with a knee injury. He took a job in Atlanta and, as a born salesman, was involved over the years in a variety of businesses, primarily specialty advertising culminating most recently in his own business, Mallard Promotions.
Billy was a raconteur extraordinaire. He found humor and good spirit in all situations and affirmed everyone. A lifelong sports analyst, Billy was a colorful local TV announcer of Lovett football for four years. He was an avid fisherman from childhood, frequenting the water with his boys, friends and relatives across favorite locales including the Piedmont Driving Club lake, the North Carolina Outer Banks, Sea Island Marshes of Glynn and the Rock House in Coweta County. No one was better company during a slow day on the water.
A sort of Pied Piper of sports, Billy was a beloved coach of multitudes of children at Buckhead Baseball, NYO football and PRUMC basketball. To be on Coach Mallard's team was a treat as well as a learning experience. He loved his boys and girls fiercely, cut them no slack and rewarded them with endless laughter. His greatest legacy is and will always be the loving warmth and laughter that he constantly brought to his family and friends, and the hole that he leaves in all of our lives can never be filled.
Billy was a member of the Piedmont Driving Club, Capital City Club, Round Table, Nine O'Clocks and the Sea Island Club.
Visitation will be at H.M. Patterson & Son–Spring Hill from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 24. A service will be held at Northside Methodist Church at 1 p.m. Monday with a reception following at the church. The family suggests donations to be used specifically for head and neck cancer research at the Winship Cancer Institute, 1365 Clifton Rd NE, Atlanta, GA 30322 or Gentiva Hospice Health Service, Inc., 3350 Riverwood Parkway, Suite 1400, Atlanta, GA 30339. Sad, sad, sad, sad, sad, sad.

Receiving this news today, I am sad.

Bill was a living poem by God Almighty,
and through his teaching and humanity, made me a better man.

I also celebrated holy laughter itself in his presence, often to the point of tears. In my tears now, I hear the echo of his laughter.

My sister, Darlene, a Myers Park HS classmate of Billy's, sent me the obituary. I am sorry I didn't know him better, but I do remember him. I send special condolences to his sister Ann, who was a dear friend of mine all through grammar school. I would love to contact Ann after all these years. If she sees this and would like to contact me, my email is [email protected]. Nancy (Hassler) Clemmer, Atlanta, GA

I am so very sorry to hear, last night, of Billy's passing. Wish I would have heard sooner and could have come to honor his beautiful life. The first time I met Billy I felt like we'd been friends forever. He made you feel that way, embracing you from the start with his magnatic personality. What an amazing man he was, and what a loving tribute his obit. was to him. My prayers will be with you, Cindy & boys, that God will grant you all much peace soon.

After reading the remarks in this Guest Book, there are no new words to say, so we will add our heartfelt condolences and love to all of the Mallard/Bickerstaff family. Mike has fond memories of being in the Press Box with Billy, Hollis and Bo, working the Lovett football games. Such a giant of a man. Lewis Grizzard has competition in Heaven in the Laughter Department.

Cindy, please accept my deepest and heartfelt condolences to you and your sons on your unimaginable loss. What an amazing man and beautiful spirit Billy was. I did not know Billy other than a quick introduction but, oh, he sounds like he brought such joy and happiness to the lives of those around him. I wish I could be there to offer my sympathy and love to you in person but distance and family situations will not allow. Please know how much I care.

Cindy, Rick and I are thinking of you and the boys.
Words are inadequate to express our condolences.
Billy will live on in the many, many people he touched just being "Billy". I continue to "put the whammy" on you and the boys. I am sorry to be so far away. Godspeed to you all!

It's hard to imagine a world without Billy Mallard in it. He was larger than life and made everyone he was with smile and laugh. He had a very special gift. He brought sunshine into a room when he entered. He will be missed by everyone he touched. It's sad to lose a close friend like Billy, but I smile to myself when I picture Billy up in heaven along side of John Head and Bob Shipman sipping on a scotch drink in a Tervis Tumbler. My heart goes out to Cindy and family for their great loss. You are in my prayers.
