William May Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 3 to Feb. 4, 2010.
MAY , William Clifford William Clifford May was a husband, father, friend, companion, and a comrade in arms among the many other things people will remember about him. Bill was predeceased by his wife of sixty-seven years, Molly Aileen (Clark) who preceded him into heaven in 2008, and by his brother Sydney May and sisters Clare Wikdahl and Alice Carey. He is survived by one brother Edward May of Vancouver, British Columbia. Bill was born on June 15, 1920 into a family that valued sports as a pastime. He competed as a junior hockey professional before the age of eighteen, and went into the army in 1939 when his older brother was promoted and made a place for him in the Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians) Regiment. Bill and Molly married in 1941 after he called for Molly to elope and join him in Toronto while he was taking basic training with the Strathconas. When Molly answered his call (and brought her mother along for the trip), he jumped the fence at camp and they were married one day before he was shipped overseas to Europe. Bill and Molly never saw each other again for another five years. Bill returned to St. James, Manitoba in 1945 and his career took him to Calgary in 1946, on to Vancouver in 1949, back to Calgary in 1954, over to Germany in 1957, and back to Calgary in 1959. His career reached its most celebrated period when he was appointed Regimental Sergeant-Major in 1960 with his beloved Strathconas. Bill May retired from the army in 1963 and began a new career as an insurance adjustor and later as a Manager training junior adjustors for several companies including the Co-operators Insurance Group. He retired from that career in 1987 to indulge his grandchildren and their grandmother in recreation travels to British Columbia and points south. Bill was a soft touch for many charities that needed his help. He spent some of his retirement time acting as president of his home community, the Glamorgan Community Association where he found enough time to raise money for a new building roof. Bill leaves his seven children, David May, Hillery May, Julie Furneaux, Roberta May-McLean (Bruce), Gregory May, Lee May, and Shaun May (Maureen) to mourn his loss. He also leaves thirteen grandchildren, Kevin May, Patrick May, Ella May, Charlotte Furneaux, David Furneaux, Michael McLean, Dana McLean, Zacharija May, Kristian May, Ayrn May, Alison May, Liam May and Nolan May, all of whom still live in Calgary. In his last years, he was comforted by his close friend, Phyllis Charbonneau, also of Calgary. On Friday, February 5, 2010 following a private family graveside farewell, the family will be serving refreshments from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. to friends and neighbours at the Glamorgan Community Association hall located at 4207 - 41 Avenue S.W. Arrangements entrusted to LEYDEN'S FUNERAL HOME, RECEPTION & CREMATION CENTRE. Telephone: 403-228-4422. www.leydens.com .

Dear cousins,

Please accept my condolences on the passing of your father. He was a very nice man and well remembered by me and my family. It was nice to see Uncle Bill when he visited Dad in Ottawa and when he welcomed us in his home a few years ago when I took my family on a ski trip. He shared many photos and stories about my Dad, Uncle Eddie and him. We are saddened by his passing and will cherish the memories we have of your father.
Sincerely,
Kevin, Jacqueline, Roxanne, Sebastien, Patrick, Malcolm and Cedric

The May Family,

Please accept my condolences in the loss of your Father, Bill. Unfortunately, I too was unaware of his passing and was devastated to have missed the Celebration of his Life.

Growing up in Glamorgan was synonymous to living next door to the May family. Although I have many fond memories of those years, two of my fondest memories are as follows:

One was when we... Julie, Roberta, Linda & Irene, and Jan & I regularly gathered together in our backyard for our annual 'back to school' photos. To say we didn't think much of it then, is an understatement, it's times like these that I am very grateful for that shared bond.

My second fond memory was Bill's and my shared love of the 'roaring game' of curling. It was a great day for me when Bill needed a spare for his team, and would 'honor' me with the opportunity to fill in. Bill's obvious joy of sports and his fun loving personality, made the sharing of an event such as this, a memorable one for me.

Always warm and caring, I cannot imagine our lives without the love and support of one of our dearest of neighbours... the May family. The Silverthorne family truly was blessed to have had the good fortune to share our lives with a fine family, such as yours. Thank you.

Once again, please accept my deepest sympathy for your family at this very sad time.

With much love and blessings,

Allan Silverthorne

To The May Family,

Please accept our condolences.

Growing up next door to the May family was the greatest thing that could happen to a kid like me and it all started with Bill May. His generosity, love for sports and fair play will live with me forever.

So many kids on our block learned how to ride our bikes because of the wonderful scooter he brought back from his time based in Germany. We learned how to keep our balance with this scooter and then when it was time to graduate to the big bikes we passed it on to the next generation. Moving on to the big bikes had its challenges, but when and if an accident happened Bill had a keen ear to come to the rescue.

Shaun and I had a great time growing up together and one of my fondest memories was when our two dads, Shaun and I would tee off at 7:00 am every Sunday morning at Shaganappi Golf course for many years. Mr. May would share his stories and jokes about the days when he and his buddies would get a chance to golf on leave during World War II.

I spent a lot of time with Mr. May growing up. Whether he was teaching me how to ride a bike, golf, play hockey, use tools, or drive a three in the tree standard truck he was always there for me.

My thoughts and prayers are always with your family and your father.

To the May Family:

So sorry to hear about the passing of your dad! It brings back so many memories about the years on Glamorgan Drive. It's the end of an era!

Unfortunately, I didn't hear about the celebration at the Glamorgan Community hall until just a few day ago. I usually read the paper daily, but I obviously missed one. Jill forwarded the write up to us , as we are on holiday in Bali. It was a lovely tribute to your dad and his family.
You are all in my thoughts and prayers
Sincerely,
Jan(Silverthorne) and Jim Corner

Our deepest condolences on the loss of your father. Our family was also a member of the Strathcona Regiment and served in Germany and Calgary with your Dad. I personally remember riding the school bus from the Sarcee PMQ's to school with David and Hillary.
Both your parents were wonderful people and will be missed.

Bill was my grandfather. He was a very busy man, but never too busy to have a cheeseburger, chili and watch the hockey game with me. I was only a young man as he reached the heights of 92 years and tranquilly reflect upon the younger years of his and my life together. He was always in the background of my life but would occasionally bring himself to the foreground. I will remember his support and his love. I will fondly remember our last hours together. He is with my grandmother and they are happily in communion once again. He knew that things weren't right in this world and did what he could to aid in change. He is a venerable soul, worthy of honor. PS, I wonder how St. Peter is going to handle him after all those jokes he was famous for telling down here.

As i am currently on vacation in Holland, I will be unable to attend Bill's service. I was one of the adjusters that Bill trained, at the Co-operators. Bill was an excellent teacher and very knowledgeable. I am still in the insurance industry, and owe a huge thanks of gratitude to Bill for his guidance and friendship. My heartfelt sympathy to Bill's family.
Sincerely, Helen Pick
