William McCain Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 31, 2024.
William Corey McCain was born in Bakersfield, California, on August 16, 1972.

William passed on July 14, 2024 in Albuquerque, NM, after a long but strong fight against diabetes and kidney failure.

William was a larger-than-life character. At 6'6" and 240 pounds, he commanded any room he entered. A gentle giant, he had a heart of gold and was a lifelong and loyal friend to many and a dedicated son to his adoring mom Cora who was a nurse in Bakersfield.

William attended St. Francis elementary school in Bakersfield, Garces High School in Bakersfield where he played football, and University of La Verne in where he earned a Bachelor of Science in sociology as well as a Masters in early childhood education with emphasis in special needs.

Immediately after college, William was involved working in security in the Orange County area where he happily would tell many of the colorful stories his career brought him.

His passion for football later took him down the sports path where he both recruited and coached for SUNY, Fordham, USMMA, and NMI in Roswell.

When his diabetes and dialysis made a football traveling schedule tough to continue, William switched to both juvenile probation work and community schoolwork in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was employed as a security guard right up to his passing and kept a stern eye to the last minute on the entry gate at work which was next to his home.

William had a very quick wit, a dry hilarious sense of humor, and could always be counted on for being a supportive and understanding friend. His dedication to anything he engaged in, including his friends and family, was unwavering. A lifelong patriot, he loved his country and respected the police and military. He was proud of his participation in a volunteer fire company while living in NY. He thrived on talking politics. William would light up with emotion and vigor when talking about the politician he did not like, which was a very long list. His lively political banter will be sorely missed in this current election season.

William was preceded by his mother, Cora Louise Spivey and grandparents, Susie and Jangles Miller, and is survived by his forever brother Joey Noll and countless friends who adored him.

Corey, as many call him, will be missed by all. We can imagine him now with his favorite high school teacher, Doc Willey, in heaven continuing the fun conversations. We look forward to seeing him there, and we are certain he will be one of heaven's best security guards.

I was unaware of Big Will's passing and hadn't heard from him in awhile. I met Big Will when he was attending LaVerne College and I was right down the street @ Claremont McKenna College. He was one of my greatest supporters and always cheered me on during basketball games. Whenever he went home to Bakersfield, he brought me some special taffy from a candy store in Bakersfield. We had lost touch after some years, and reconnected in the last four years. We shared some education and coaching stories. He also started sending me candy again! He was such a faithful friend who always had my best interest at heart. I was hoping to go on a road trip to Cali this summer and was planning to visit him. Sorry, friend. You will be greatly missed. RIP

Since we first met back in fourth grade at St. Francis, you have been a good friend. By the sixth grade, you were towering over everybody. Your kind and compassionate heart makes you one true gentle giant. I will miss your stories, talking politics, and ripping into those communist lefties up in Santa Fe (really all commie lefties). I now wish I had made that quick trip from Santa Fe to the ABQ more often.
I will miss your physical presence on this earth, while knowing you are at peace.
Thank you William "Corey" McCain for all your humor, wisdom, and generosity.

I remember Coach McCain after I got out of enemy and joined the military. He would call me once in a good while asking how I was every time you heard something on the news about the military. He would always call me and try to verify then ask me how I´m doing, also give some good advice. Coach taught me a lot was always willing to coach me even when I left Coach. Thank you Coach for being bored of my life and helping me

Cory light up any room he was in with his gregarious nature and knack for telling a good tale. As sister to his 2nd mama ("crazy white lady"), Cory's memory is forever embedded in family folklore. I'm sure they are telling a few tales in heaven! God Bless Cory!
