William McCall Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 11, 2024.
William "Bill" Richard McCall AKA "Gramps" passed away on May 28, 2024 in Lakeway, Texas. He was born on June 22, 1946 in Oak Park, Illinois to Robert Francis and Julia Louise (Toren) McCall. He is survived by his wife, Janis Claire (Slater) McCall; his twin daughters, Nicole Elizabeth McCall & Alison Louise (McCall) Gordon; son-in-law, Scott Matthew Gordon; and his grandchildren, Finley McCall Gordon & Charley Claire Gordon.

He studied Business Management and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree at East Texas State University. He was an avid swimmer in college and had a swimming scholarship at Evansville University. He transferred to East Texas State University to be closer to home and met the love of his life Janis there! They got married on October 4, 1969 and then moved to Little Rock, Arkansas. During the Vietnam war he joined the Air Force at Little Rock Air Force Base and he ran the Supply Squadron to provide the airplanes with the parts they needed. After leaving the Air Force he worked as an Account Manager for Banking Software at Fidelity National Information Services. When he retired in 2015 he became "CEO" of Gramps Services where he performed handyman services and worked on light construction projects for many people in the area. He gained all his clients by word of mouth due to his exceptional service and servant's heart.

He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a devoted member of Austin Ridge Bible Church. He loved Jesus and lived that out by serving his friends and family. He was very active in running triathlons most of his life, and his favorite part was always the swim. He had a lifelong passion for working on his model railroad and had a layout in every house he owned. For the last 10 years he spent every summer working with the Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad in Chama, New Mexico restoring historic trains, specifically the GRAMPS tank car. He loved cars and was always tinkering on his yellow 1975 C3 and red 2003 Z06 Corvettes. He adored all dogs but especially his Coton de Tulear, Jazz. He took every opportunity he could to spend time outdoors with his friends and family taking them to his favorite wineries in the Texas Hill Country. He loved to travel, especially to the beaches in Kauai and to the mountains in Colorado and New Mexico. He loved music especially Jazz and Country. Bill was dearly loved by his friends and family, and will be immeasurably missed.

In lieu of flowers please donate to Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, Inc. or Mobile Loaves and Fishes Community First Village.

I am just now learning of Bill's passing. I am so sorry to hear about this and my condolences to his family. I am one of Bill's "railroad friends." I met, and worked with Bill, as volunteers for the Friends of the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad. Per the above bio, I must have met Bill 10 years ago as I have exclusively worked on the GRAMPS tank cars during that time.

Bill was a willing and eager participant in railroad car restoration work. I recall that just last year, we were finishing up work on the very tank car that Bill is standing by in the above photo. The railroad was coming to pick up the car in a couple of hours for a departing train and the car needed a fair amount of "touch up" paint work. Three of us were standing there discussing the work needing done. I wasn't too motivated to get the work done even though I knew it needed to be done soon. I don't know why I was hesitant. Maybe because it was hot outside, we were tired, I really don't remember why. I DO remember that within two minutes of making the decision that the work needed to be done now---and while I was trying to figure out how to avoid it---I looked up and here comes Bill with a bucket of black paint and a paint brush in his hands! He started painting immediately!!

We (I did end up helping with the paint) got the work done and a little later that day, the car rolled out of the shop as a completed project.

Bill was a good, good man! I have been looking forward since last year to seeing Bill again at the next railroad restoration work session, scheduled two weeks away as I write this. It will be another shock to me again when I arrive there and I walk into the shop looking for his greeting . . . . to no avail. To be sure, he will be missed and with us always in spirit!

Thank you so much Bill McCall. It was a great privilege for me to get to know you and work with you.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and you family. Bill was my boss at FIS. He was smart, kind, funny and a great guy. Loved his family tons! Even more than his trains and cars... He introduced me to Decoy wine and I can finally get it where I live after all the years. He will be missed.

I worked with Bill at FIS. He was a great guy and manager. And, he always balanced the needs of his bank customer and his employees. That's always a hard thing to balance and he did a great job of that.
