ODOG Wheatens with Jack McKissock - 2008
Peggy Warren
June 30, 2013
Jack, Joan and Linda were instrumental in helping me get Obedience titles on my Wheatens -- in fact, Jack coined the phrase "Soft-Headed Wheaten Retriever" when I was trying to teach Bailey to retrieve the dumbbell. Jack helped me learn how to connect with my dogs and was always instructive and supportive. The obedience world will miss Jack, and so will I. My thoughts are with Linda, Jenny and Kelly, and of course, Jester. So many terrific dogs are happy to welcome Jack to the Rainbow Bridge.

My sympathies and condolences to Jack's
family. He was a lovely man, devoted to family, friends and his dog(s).
I remember Jack most fondly for his judging my little labrador at the obedience trials in Powassan a number of years ago. It was his last judging
assignment. Such a loss to the dog world.

I remember giving Jack his first perfect score many years ago. He was a good friend.

I wish I had known Jack better because of what little I saw, he had my most respect and admiration. He and Joan always had sound advice and kind words to help me with my struggling handling skills in the obedience ring. I will keep the family in my prayers.

I will always remember my good friend and golf buddy who was a big part of my life. Your great sense of humor, that nice way about you and your passion for the game of golf was truly our connection.
Always good times when we were together.
I will miss you dear friend.

Our heartfelt sympathies to Jack's family.
I remember Jack as a somewhat gruff and stern man when I was training my 1st obedience dog. I did a Sanction Match under him in Ottawa with my Maggie, who could not work if "daddy" was in the building. She was delighted in the ring to see someone so very similar,so she briskly took her dumbbell and sat squarely in front of him, offering up her prize. I think it was the hair...somewhat receding and white!! Then there was the time when we did a Utility routune under Jack in the pouring rain, in Brome. He wore a big brimmed black hat and a black rain cape, and my Maggie was not so enamoured of him on this occasion. She failed miserably, but he came over, patted my back with the encouraging words,..."Well, she passed half the exercises!"
My next Golden, Tess, came along and we were awarded a HIT from Jack, which I took as an honour, as he demanded a lot when judging. When I saw him competing in the ring he made it look so smooth and effortless. In the past few years I have seen him the most at Ambertrail, working his beloved Jester in the field. I think we shared that love of being out in the field with our dogs, watching them do what they love the most. Warren and I were there last Wed., which was his favourite day to come to Maxville, and low and behold there he was, but this time with 2 other people, who threw bumpers for Jester. They were only there a short while and were gone. Little did I know that this would be the last time we would see him there.
The world has lost a good man, with a heart of gold.
RIP Jack

Our years knowing Jack were special to us. We remember our time with both Jack and Joan at our cottage. They brought up their 4 goldens to play with our 2 goldens, and we all had a blast. Nothing more friendlier than 6 wet goldens as Jack would say. We spent countless hours training, talking and laughing. Jack will be missed by everyone who knew him. Our sincere condolences to Linda and the family.

I met Jack in the 1980's we were both trying for top obedience dog in Canada. Jack and I competed as friends not as rivals. Many laughs were had at post trial drinks and dinners. I will miss him. A true gentleman

I will always remember Jack for his ready laughter and always vocal encouragement. He was a difficult task master, but he knew what we were capable of even if we didn't. Nobody was more proud when Cyrano finally achieved his last leg on his Open title!
I'll miss you Jack...

I began obedience training with Jack over 20 years ago. He challenged me if I didn't do my homework, supported me when I competed and rejoiced with me regarding my dogs' accomplishments. Beneath Jack's somewhat stern exterior, there was a man who wanted the best for all his students and their dogs. If he felt you or your dog were not meeting your potential, he let you know! Assisting Jack when he taught his classes, gave me a greater understanding of his training techniques. I never could roll the mats up after class to Jack's satisfaction but I did meet his standard in “broom-pushing”.
Jack encouraged me to become an Obedience judge. He critiqued me during fun match judging and gave good advice based on his judging experiences. As the exam approached, Jack gave up his time for several weeks to grill me on the rule book until I could recite it verbatim! Even now when I am judging, I still hear Jack's voice in my head..... “What's the principal feature? Is the performance a pass, fail or points off.””
Jack was always willing to go the extra mile for those who were serious about training their dogs. We would meet in various locations about town to train in different environments. While I was doing private training sessions with Jack in the past year, I commented that perhaps my older dog should just be retired from training and competition. Jack's response was ... “If the old dog is still enjoying it, then keep on doing it.”
That sums up Jack's attitude. Yes, he was becoming older and less able, but he still enjoyed working with his dog and kept on doing it right up until his last days.
My condolences to Linda and family. Jack has left us but his contribution to Obedience and Field won't be forgotten. Thank you, Jack.

Our heartfelt sympathies in the loss of a wonderful man. May you rest in peace Jack.

After a long friendship with both Jack and Joan, we enjoyed having both come to our Obedience trials where Jack's easy way with new owner/handlers, his big smile and helpful comments, often made the difference between people continuing to work and train their dogs and quitting from nerves and lack of confidence.
Jack's last visit to our club/trials, was after Joan passed on, and he announced then that it would be his last obedience judging assignment.
While I never worked on the same judging panel as Jack, I did get to judge him in both obedience and field tests, and vice-versa, and wished it had been more often. You could always learn something from Jack, regardless how long you had been involved with dogs, training, etc, yourself.
Dogs of our breeding went to his training classes, and we used to get regular updates on how they were progressing - even if they never went on or competed in trials.
In an early visit here, Jack awarded a HIT to a young, inexperienced, Novice A teenager with his young black Labrador....something Billy Paul remembers with amazement to this day. Billy is now married, has a family, and many years have passed, but Billy came down specially to meet Jack when last here.
Hw will be missed, but we know he is back with Joan and send our best wishes to his family at this sad time.
Thankyou Jack -
Sandy Briggs, Ivan Paul, Wimberway Reg'd., and EPS Training Assoc, Powassan, Ont.
He will leave the dog world, obedience, field, training, and common sense, a better place for having been with us.

I first met Jack in the early 80's when he and Joan were campaigning with their wonderful Golden Amber. I also was showing a Sheltie at that time and he was always so genuinely happy and encouraging whenever I did well. A very kind gentleman who will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Sincere condolences to his family.

Jack and Jester

Jack was a judge and a man who enjoyed what he did, loved the dogs and you just knew he was pulling for the teams to succeed. No fuss, no muss and common sense he was an inspiration to many of us newbies and oldies alike. Watching him work with any of his dogs was a joy but with Jester at his side they almost seemed to become "one". Always the gentleman, his calmness and "just do it" spirit will be sorely missed. We were honoured to show with and to him. Aileen & Rhona Murray

What a shock - just last summer we trained together at Maxville. Jack was one of the people who encouraged me to pursue obedience judging. He would often attend fun matches at Blue Ribbon in Montreal where I was judging and always had a positive word to say. Thank you Jack - I'll always remember your signature Utility Signal routine.

Jack was my instructor in obedience classes with my bichon frise, Echo. He was watching when
we achieved the first leg and was standing at ring side when we managed to get our CDX. We couldn't have done it without him. He inspired me to breed for both conformation and intelligence. Thanks Jack. Keep watching, please!!!

I met Jack a long time ago, while he was judging Darwin, my first flatcoat, and me, in the Open B ring. I've been in the ring and in the field under him a few more times. One day I got an email from him asking me if I would like to sell him a puppy flatcoat. He came to m,y place almost every week ends to see the evolution of the litter. We all agreed that the best dog for Jack was the boy with the red collar. That puppy was Jester. Jester is now an ambassador for my kennel. Jack, thank you for all your hard work and commitment. You will be missed. Yvan

Debra and I were friends with Joan and Jack. I always admired Jack's calm and his" down to earth " manner. Regardless of all his successes and achievements he always had time to help. Our condolences to Jack's family. Jim Cochrane.

I will always remember Jack's gruff exterior but also his quick wit and wonderful sense of humour. He always had an encouraging word to those of us just starting off on our obedience journey(s)and for that I am eternally grateful. His love for his dogs ( and they for him) was so very apparent whenever I met him. He was an inspiration and will not be forgotten. I was honoured to have our paths cross. Condolences to his family.

I always looked forward to seeing Jack whenever he came to Atlantic Canada to judge. I had the pleasure of stewarding or showing each and every time he came. My favorite memory of Jack is him judging my brace routine at a speciality when he made us heel for about 4 minutes, and followed that with a drop on recall, all the time with that little smile he always wore. On on work trips to Ottawa i always tried to drop into a class if I was there on the right night. One of all time favorite dog people, rest in peace my friend.

Jack and I go back a long long way..........a couple of weeks ago I had lunch with Jack.....he told me that he had only a very short time left, said he was ready actually his exact words were “if I can't get out and train my dog I might as well be gone” I know he is gone to a place where he can once again run and train dogs. Joan is probably throwing birds for him right now! Good man! Good dog man! Friend to many, my friend ..Pease to you Jack.....sincere condolences to his family.

Jack McKissock made a tremendous difference in my life and the life of my family. Had I never taken classes with him and been exposed not only to his sound dog-training methodologies, but also to his high expectations, I suspect I would never have pursued competitive obedience. One of my great drivers, not just in the early days but throughout my 15 years in obedience, was to try to live up to Jack's high expectations. He was gruff, he was demanding, and behind it all – he was kind. He was a teacher, judge, friend and mentor who we will remember with love and gratitude for the rest of our lives. Thank you, Jack and our heartfelt condolences and support to Linda, Kelly and the rest of the family.
