William MOORE Obituary

Published by Calgary Herald from Apr. 4 to Apr. 7, 2016.

MOORE, The Honorable William Kenneth
C.M., LL.D., QC.
December 5, 1925 - March 31, 2016
Ken Moore, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 31, 2016. Ken was born December 5, 1925 in Calgary, to Patrick and Virginia Moore. He was one of seven children who grew up in the southwest community of Scarboro. After attending Sacred Heart School and St. Mary's Boys School, he followed the footsteps of his brother Doran and enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy. Ken trained as a wireless telegrapher and was subsequently stationed in Halifax aboard the destroyer HMCS Quappelle until May 1945.
Following the war, Ken attended the University of Alberta, where he excelled playing football for the Golden Bears, and took an interest in the law. He played on the first Edmonton Eskimo team in 1948-49, and played for the arch-rival Calgary Stampeders in 1946 and 1950-51. He graduated with a law degree in 1952, and joined the law firm Shouldice, Milvain & MacDonald, which would later become Moore, Lougheed, Atkinson, McMahon & Tingle. He appeared before the Supreme Court of Canada on seven separate occasions, and was named to the Queen's Council in 1968. He accepted an appointment to the Supreme Court of Alberta Trial division in 1972, was appointed Associate Chief Justice of the Court of Queen's Bench in 1981, and Chief Justice in 1984, retiring in 2000. He was instrumental in the creation and completion of the Calgary Courts building.
After retiring from the bench, Ken joined Burnett, Duckworth and Palmer as Counsel, where he successfully completed over 100 mediations and arbitrations. He worked regularly until age 87, and maintained his position at BDP and his membership in the Alberta Bar Association until his passing on March 31, 2016.
His numerous accomplishments include various Executive appointments to the Canadian Bar Association, and the Canadian Judicial Council where he served as Vice Chairman from 1988-1990. He was honoured with a Doctorate of Law and induction onto the Sports Wall of Fame at the University of Alberta in 1988. He was appointed as Honorary Professor of Law at the University of Calgary in 1994 and awarded a Doctorate of Law in 1999. He was presented with a Distinguished Service Award from the Alberta Law Society and Canadian Bar Association in 2000. He was awarded the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal in 2003, the Order of Canada in 2007, and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012.
In addition to his professional achievements, Ken was a tireless community volunteer; coaching his sons in minor hockey, holding executive positions with the Federation of Community Associations, the Calgary Family Service Bureau, St. Mary's University, the Calgary Booster Club, the Catholic Charities of Calgary, the Calgary Boy Scouts Association, the Downtown Rotary Club, the Stampeder Football club, the Naval Museum of Alberta, the Calgary Golf and Country Club, and the Calgary Exhibition & Stampede, where he served as a volunteer for 42 years and is a Past President.
Above Ken's community and professional accomplishments, he placed the highest value on his family and his deep and abiding faith in God. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Audrey Ann Moore (McHugh) on November 25, 2014 and is survived by his seven children and their spouses: Joan (Yves) Gauthier, Jim (Linda) Moore, Dan (Gina) Moore, Bill (Allison Hakomaki) Moore, Maureen (Larry) Hobden, Tracey Moore-Lewis (Ward Lewis), and Bob (Jody) Moore. Ken was a cherished grandpa to 20 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by his sister Virginia Kelly, and by dozens of nieces and nephews.
The Moore family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Dr. Lana Lovo, and to the exemplary staff at Garrison Greens Seniors Residence for the compassionate care they provided for our Dad in his final months. In lieu of flowers, please give back to your community by supporting or volunteering for an organization of your choice.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Anthony's Catholic Church (5340 - 4th Street S.W.) today, April 7, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
In living memory of Ken Moore, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.

Our whole family had the greatest respect for Chief Justice Moore, a man who had great success in all of his endeavours.
He was as resolute and intense on the field as he was off, one never to be intimidated by large challenges.

Ken and my father Randy were true friends. They were part of the original Grandstand Attractions Committee. Without Ken's support and wisdom (along with his friends and fellow committee members) The Young Canadians of the Calgary Stampede and The Grandstand Show, would never have come to be.

Ken was a great visionary for Calgary and my father shared the same values. Their vision and dedication touched tens of thousands of people.

All of the Avery family send their prayers and best wishes to the Moore family. We are privileged to have known such a great man as Ken.

Dear Moore Family,

My name is Al King, and Kenneth and I were childhood buddies and part of the 'Scarboro Rat Pack". One of my fondest memories was when the Moore's maid would get on the front steps of the house and call everyone in for dinner. In a booming, sing song-y voice she would call out " Tom, Doran, Dick and Lorne, Kenneth and Patricia...Supper". Kenny and I were good friends and remained that way over the years, even though we did not see each other often.

Another story that Kenny never forgot, was when we were playing cops and robbers in his basement one rainy day. I was swinging the wooden pistol we had made around, and I broke the only lightbulb in the basement. Kenny was scared that his mother would be really upset, so I volunteered to go home to get the burned out light bulb that my mother had in her sewing basket for darning socks. We cleaned up the mess, installed the burned out light bulb and the secret was ours forever.

My condolences to all of Kenny's loved ones.

I'm very sorry to hear this news. Ken admitted me to the Bar some 26 years ago this fall and he and Audrey were of course great friends and contemporaries of my parents at U of A and of Dad and Ardine in later years. Other commitments will unfortunately prevent me from attending on Thursday but I convey my condolences to the Moore family on the passing of a very fine man.

I am truely sorry to hear of the passing of Justice Moore . I had the pleasure of working with him at Queen's Bench many years ago when he was still Chief Justice. I was saddened when he decided to retire from here but knew that he was on another journey & to just enjoy life outside of this Courthouse. He was always good to me whenever I sat as a clerk with him . He left a very big pair of shoes to fit into for the next Chief Justice . You are onto your next journey Justice Moore - be safe up there . You will be Missed . :(
