William Mortimer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 16, 2023.
William (Bill) L. Mortimer, 75 of St. Augustine, FL passed away Tuesday, February 28, 2023. Bill was born in Newport News, Virginia to the late Egbert L. and Bernice Bailey Mortimer. He grew up in Virginia and began his Naval Ship Engineering career as a Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice. Bill enjoyed a 40+ year career supporting the Navy at Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a Senior Structural Engineer and retiring in 2006 as the Business Office Manager of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center. After retirement, Bill moved to St. Augustine in 2009.

Bill was an avid turkey hunter and loved quiet times in the woods, a trait that was passed on from his father and grandfather. Over the past five years, he became a pickleball enthusiast and enjoyed playing pickleball with neighborhood friends. Through his own recovery in Alcoholics Anonymous over the past 32 years, Bill carried the message to others and encouraged them to "stay in the middle". Bill will be dearly missed by his family and many friends.

Mr. Mortimer is survived by his wife of 26 years, Sharon Mortimer, son, William Scott (Kolleen) Mortimer, stepsons, Daniel and Matthew Crews, brothers, Mike (Karen) Mortimer and Allen (Ella) Mortimer, grandchildren Isla Mortimer and Isaiah (Jasmine) Crews, great granddaughter, Malaya, as well as several nieces and nephews and extended family.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 22nd at 1:30 p.m. at Bacon's Castle Baptist Church, 86 Bacon's Castle Trail, Surry, VA
